The Canary Islands, Amsterdam, and Paris are among this year's top trending destinations – for child-free adults looking to take a holiday in September or October, research has found.

Figures from hotel booking site, Hotels.com, found that searches for adult-only vacations in “Shoulder Season” – the period between summer and winter – increase more than tenfold compared to family holidays during this time, with a 1,170% rise.

And when looking at some of the destinations that have increased in popularity since September 2022, travel company Expedia found that searches for October holidays in Amsterdam are up 70% year-on-year, while Paris has seen a 35% year-on-year increase for September trips.

Meanwhile, Tenerife is “King of the Canaries”, with searches up 25% compared to last year for both September and October vacations – and double the searches for Gran Canaria and Lanzarote combined.

And on the Spanish mainland, Malaga has also seen a surge, with searches for some September sun in the Spanish city up 40% from 2022.

The survey of 1,000 “DINKs” (adults with Dual Income and No Kids) also explored some of the top reasons why they prefer travelling outside of traditional summer months – as a quarter of those polled eye up a vacation over the next couple of months.

The slightly cooler autumn weather is the biggest appeal for 27% – while fewer noisy children is another top draw, as 15% say they would rather not have to navigate around highchairs in hotel restaurants.

In fact, 49% of the DINKs polled say they are actively put off having children – due to the idea of having to look after little ones on holiday. And 41% reckon there should be more hotels and holiday destinations that are for adults only.

A spokesman for Hotels.com, which commissioned the research, said: “The research found that 40% of DINKs regularly spend their hard-earned disposable income on travel.

“So, it’s not surprising to see so many child-free adults choosing to travel and find their perfect somewhere once everyone else’s kids are back in school.

“Not only can travelling during summer holidays cost more, you also have to put up with children on your trip, which not every adult wants to do. And of course, some people prefer the slightly cooler weather in September.”

Other top reasons DINKs would rather travel outside of school summer holidays include avoiding sunbed hoggers, keeping costs down – and for a more romantic atmosphere.

Over a fifth (21%) like the scenery better at that time of year, and the same amount believe going away then shortens the span between summer and Christmas.

Only one in ten, however, would take a trip in autumn specifically to get close to nature, according to the OnePoll.com data – with a fifth of DINKs citing a city trip as their top preference.

Staycation hotspots such as London, Edinburgh, and York, are among some of the preferred autumn destinations, while those keen to travel further afield search for trips to Paris, Barcelona, or New York.

And internal data, from Expedia, also revealed the Algarve has remained as popular as ever this year, with year-on-year searches up almost 40% from last September.

Meanwhile Ibiza, known for its mass summer appeal, is still bringing in the crowds in September, with searches up more than 25% compared to last September.

Lisbon is another trending European city climbing the charts, up 40% year-on-year. And elsewhere in the world, New York is up 25%.

But it is not just sun-seekers heading to Europe this Autumn – with UK rugby fans flocking to France for the upcoming international tournament.

Data from Vrbo shows a 115% increase in demand for the French destinations hosting games this September and October, compared to last year.

Expedia’s spokesman added: “We know from our trending destinations data that there are endless reasons for autumnal travel – whether you’re travelling for a sporting event, to avoid kids hogging the pool, or simply to hunt for that shoulder season sun.

“Whatever the reason, September and October are perfect months to get away that won’t break the bank.”
