Phil Spencer's brother fought to save parents with penknife amid fatal car crash
Phil Spencer has recounted how his brother desperately tried to save their parents after they were involved in a fatal car accident.
The 53-year-old Location, Location, Location star is one of four children as he has a younger brother named Robert and two sisters, Caryn and Helen. Tragically, the family’s mother Anne and father Richard were killed when the car they were travelling in on Saturday flipped into a river.
The elderly couple were travelling with a carer who managed to escape and raised the alarm, with Phil’s brother Robert rushing to the scene. In heartbreaking details, Phil explained how Robert valiantly tried to rescue his parents, but they were unable to be revived.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday, the Channel 4 star shared a photo of Anne and Richard and explained how the couple, aged 82 and 89 respectively, tragically lost their lives. He wrote: “The car, going very slowly, toppled over a bridge on the farm drive, upside down into the river.

Their carer was in the car and managed to climb out of a back window so the alarm was raised quite quickly.”

He then explained how Robert tried in vain to save them. Phil wrote: “As many farmers do - my brother had a penknife and so was able to cut the seat belts - he pulled them out of the river but they never regained consciousness.”
Phil has also explained that he and his siblings have found some comfort in the tragic circumstances as they have realised their parents will never live without one another. He wrote: “Although desperately sad and shocked beyond all belief - all family are clear that if there can ever be such a thing as having a ‘good end’ - this was it.

Phil also revealed that his beloved parents had been diagnosed with devastating health conditions in their late years. He revealed: “Although they were both on extremely good form in the days before (hence the sudden idea to go out to lunch), Mums Parkinson's and Dads Dementia had been worsening and the long term future was set to be a challenge.”
Phil’s Location, Location, Location co-star Kirstie Allsopp, 51, also paid tribute to Richard and Anne in a post of her own. She wrote: “They were farmers, animal lovers & devoted parents to Robert, Caryn, Helen & Philip and adored their 8 Grandchildren, the only blessing is that they died together, so will never have to mourn the loss of each other.”
