USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams is set to complete a transfer to Bournemouth and stay in the Premier League following Leeds United’s relegation last season.

On Friday, Bournemouth agreed a deal with Leeds to sign Adams for a fee of $29 million (£23m) plus achievable add-ons. News of the deal emerged following protracted negotiations with the south coast club, who felt the need for midfield re-enforcements.

Adams reportedly underwent a medical on Friday afternoon and the 24-year-old is set to sign a five-year deal. It brings to an end his career with Leeds after one season in which the American made 24 appearances in the 2022-23 Premier League season.

On Thursday, The Athletic reported a potential deal for Adams was complicated. Bournemouth believed they had triggered a time-limited relegation release clause valued at $25 million (£20m), but Leeds insisted any such clause had expired.

Despite the block in negotiations, talks continued and Adams is now set to return to the top flight. He will join the likes of Philip Billing, Lewis Cook and fellow new signing Alex Scott in the midfield under manager Androni Iraola.

Last week, Adams had travelled to London to finalise a sensational move to Chelsea only for the deal to fall through. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were interested in the former RB Leipzig star but instead decided to complete blockbuster deals for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea completed the mega signing of Caicedo, paying an initial $127 million (£100m) for the Ecuador international. They quickly finalised a stunning move for ex- Southampton star Lavia, adding the 19-year-old alongside Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Meanwhile, Adams has been recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained back in March. Leeds United revealed Adams underwent ‘non-invasive’ surgery to rehabilitate the issue and has continued to recover over preseason.

Adams reportedly stepped up his training programme in recent weeks and is scheduled to return after the international break next month. He has 36 caps for the USMNT and captained them at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where America crashed out in the last 16.

Iraola confirmed Bournemouth were closing in on signing a midfielder, although he refused to explicitly name Adams. When asked about the American directly, the 41-year-old said: “I think it's a player that right now he is not our player.

“So we have to wait, I think that you know that the club is working towards signing someone there in the midfield, but we have to wait until everything is complete.”
