There’s been more than a few blazing hot days this summer in NYC. One glance at the weather app, Rotten Applers can see that a few days of scorching temperatures are upon us.

Carvel has come to help by giving away thousands of free soft-serve ice cream treats for its National Soft Serve Day. Customers outside of New York City can buy a buy-one-get-one cup or cone of any flavor of their choosing, but extra toppings are at regular prices. Customers also purchase a limited-time double cone from Friday through Sunday.

On a first come, first serve basis, New Yorkers were able to score a free soft serve and merch on Thursday at the Empire State Building Observatory Experience in Manhattan.

The giveaway comes not only as a way to honor National Soft Serve Day but also to celebrate Carvel’s nearly century-long history. Almost 90 years ago, during Memorial Day weekend in 1934, Carvel’s Original Soft Serve ice cream was created in New York after Tom Carvel’s ice cream truck broke down in the summer heat.

“Since then, the ice cream he invented softened our world and became an enduring part of people’s lives, and there’s no better time to celebrate that than National Soft Serve Day,” Jessica Osborne, Carvel’s vice president of marketing, said.
