The crimes committed by Lucy Letby are without precedent in their horror.

It chills the blood to think that someone charged with caring for innocent young babies could carry out acts of such evil. The grief and loss suffered by the parents of the children she murdered is inconceivable. Full of elation and hope after the birth of a child, they would have expected a maternity ward to be a place of love, warmth and trust.

It is horrific to now know they were placing their children in the arms of a serial killer. We may never know what drove Letby to commit some of worst crimes known to humanity. What we do know is that everything must be done to ensure that this never happens again. Starting with a full public inquiry.

This investigation must examine why doctors’ warnings were ignored, why Letby was not stopped earlier and whether the safety procedures on NHS wards are adequate. That is the very least the families of wicked Letby’s victims deserve.

Royals’ vision

The Royal Family draws its strength from its long history and timeless traditions. But its durability has rested on its ability to adapt to changing times. When King Charles meets with Prince William next week they will discuss how the Monarchy can remain true to its past while forging a new future.

At the top of their agenda will be how to keep the family of Commonwealth countries together at a time when some members are considering cutting their relationship with the United Kingdom. Both Charles and William have key roles to play: the King to act as the guardian of his mother’s legacy and the Prince to show the changing face of royals.

Lion-hearted

A place in history awaits the Lionesses. They will join the sport’s legends with a win over Spain in tomorrow’s World Cup final. Full of determination, skill and heart, Sarina Wiegman’s side will have the whole country roaring them on to glory.
