A British dad has said that he gave up on the prospect of a 'cold, wet and extortionately expensive' staycation, heading to the sunnier shores of Turkey instead which he claims worked out cheaper anyway.

There are plenty of amazing seaside towns in the UK with sandy beaches, bustling promenades and plenty of fun activities, but there's one town that's not proven particularly popular with visitors, reports DevonLive. Weston-super-Mare beach in Somerset in theory ticks all of the boxes for a classic UK seaside break; a sandy beach, a pier with arcades, plenty of fish and chip shops, pubs, and activities for the kids.

Unfortunately, the British weather as we know doesn't always make a seaside holiday as dreamy as you'd hope for - and some fed up holidaymakers have slammed the town. In fact, one dad revealed he gave up on a break entirely, opting for Turkey instead.

Do you think UK holiday prices have become extortionate? Let us know in the comments below.

He took to Tripadvisor and wrote: “Cold, wet and extortionately expensive. 2nd day of a camping holiday with the children for 2 weeks. Cold, wet and extortionately expensive, we've given up and booked an AL holiday to Turkey and £300 cheaper, we fly out tomorrow!”

He wasn't the only person who was unimpressed. Another visitor described the beach as “rubbish” adding: “Awful place, weather not good, pier terrible, shopping disgusting, never want to go here again, Llandudno coming back.”

Barbra posted: “No deckchairs! Took my elderly mother so we could have a few hours relaxing on the beach. Not a deck chair in sight. All fastened securely away. Really? Seemed like you didn’t want anyone there. The parking machines were a nightmare. And that hideous scrap metal structure in the guise of art. Who on earth allowed that. So disappointed with the town. Shame as our hotel was 5*”.

Of course it's not surprising that Turkey made for a more enticing alternative. For a start, it's home to the cheapest beach in Europe where you can find pints for £1.10 and ice creams for 10p, not to mention the country's answer to the Maldives has over-the-water cabanas without the hefty price tags.

If the miserable UK weather has you in dire need of sunshine, the good news is that there are still plenty of deals for cheap Turkey getaways.

TUI currently has packages from £251pp, Loveholidays has offers from £101pp, while First Choice can be a great source for all-inclusive holidays from £314pp. Meanwhile easyJet holidays has last-minute Turkey deals from £212pp although some of the cheapest rates do fall outside of the school holiday dates.
