Netflix viewers have been left traumatised over a horrifying new documentary about the way food is made and processed in the United States.

The documentary titled Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food sees filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig investigate how the American food industry has failed to protect the American people from the potential deadly consequences of food-borne pathogens. The Netflix film features interviews with both experts and victims' families, looking into how the industry's failings have resulted in these consequences.

One of the many horrifying revelations was the fact that companies are able to sell chicken which is contaminated with salmonella with one expert clarifying: "Your primary assumption should be that [supermarket chicken] contains pathogens such as salmonella."

Traumatised Netflix viewers admitted the discoveries made in the documentary made them want to turn vegan to avoid falling ill with the food-borne pathogens mentioned in the film.

One viewer said: "This Poisoned documentary on Netflix makes me wanna turn vegan," while another added: "Poisoned on Netflix has TRAUMATIZED me."

"I urge everybody to go watch poisoned on Netflix. It's scary to think about what type of food we're putting in out bodies," a third tweeted and another wrote: "This is scary... Anyone of us can end up in hospital and even die just by eating a contaminated piece of lettuce or an undercooked piece of meat."

However, other viewers were unfazed by the documentary as one joked: "Poisoned on Netflix is kind of scary tbh. I'll still eat what I eat but to see how little regulations there are is pretty eye opening," and another agreed: "This Netflix documentary is scary as hell... imma still eat it though."

The inspiration behind the Netflix documentary was Jeff Benedict's book, Poisoned: The True Story Of The Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed The Way Americans Eat.

Filmmaker Stephanie argued that if the US public aired their concerns publicly about the safety of food, regulators may be forced into taking action and enforce more rules around food production. Stephanie is also behind documentaries including 2009's Tapped and Fed Up in 2014, which look into exposing the food industry.
