'We’re divided on everything, but here’s an event the whole country can back'
I am against football, both on principle and in reality.
The moaniest Arsenal widow of all time, as soon as the subject is brought up my ears and brain automatically switch off. So if even I’m excited about the Lionesses making the World Cup final, it’s fair to say this is a pretty big deal. This is football for people who don’t like football. And for people who do like football.
For those who care about the offside rule, and those who haven’t got a clue but are simply swept up in the spirit. It’s inspiring for everyone paying even the slightest bit of attention. I want my son to see it, and be reminded that women are capable of everything men are.
I want my goddaughters to see it and know that there are no limits to the courses their lives can take. I want every sexist, misogynistic bloke who made jokes and disparaging comments about women in sport to eat their tedious old hats. The Lionesses are good for us individually, and as a nation.
We’re divided on just about everything, but here’s an event the whole country can get behind. A little hope for us all. Something to remind us that dreams can come true, hard work pays off and anything is possible. So, er, no pressure then, ladies.
