Questions remain after the body of crypto king Christian Peev was found chopped up and stuffed down a toilet.

Investigators in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, fingered a suspect named Vesco Valchinov after the remains of the American, 41, were found when plumbers were called to investigate a blocked drain.

It is alleged Peev, who is believed to have been killed on August 8 or 9, was battered to death with a dumbbell before he was cut into pieces and flushed down the toilet some days later. His killer was not able to dispose of his skull and some of the large bones, so buried those parts instead.

Peev's death comes a month after an unrelated case saw 41-year-old businessman and crypto mogul Fernando Pérez Algaba found dead in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He went missing while he was visiting from his home in Spain.

An autopsy found that the millionaire had been shot three times before he was dismembered. The motive remains unclear, but days before Algaba had complained about "evil people."

"It's incredible how there are such evil people in the world that while you're thinking of helping them, they're thinking of destroying you," he said.

While unrelated, there are some similarities to that of the death of Peev. So what do we know?

Why was Christian Peev killed?

Local media reports indicate police have offered jealousy or money as possible motives for Peev's death. Police are said to believe Valchinov was jealous of the money his friend made while both of them invested in crypto.

Peev was a regular visitor to high-society parties and events before he was murdered, and it is believed this is where he met his alleged killer, who was working as a bartender. He was known for making his fortune off crypto investments in the US after he graduated from university and it is here he met Valchinov around five years ago.

What evidence is there?

Police said a camera from the apartment Peev was found showed him and Valchinov walking into the building with his alleged killer.

The force revealed: "All contacts he had on the day he was last seen were checked. One of them was with his friend Vesco Valchinov... A camera was seized from the block where the suspect lives and it was established that he and Christian entered the entrance in the late afternoon of August 8."

Christia was not seen the next day when the suspect went out alone and returned to the flat numerous times, investigators said. Valchinov reportedly fled to a hotel in Vitosha, but police tracked his phone and were able to find him there.

How did police become aware?

Authorities were alerted to the death when Christian's cousin filed a report on August 10 confirming that he had disappeared two days earlier, according to prosecutors and the Ministry of the Interior in a joint press conference.

Another man, named Konstantin Subotinov, allegedly helped the killer hide the dismembered corpse of the victim.

Police said Subotinova admitted to helping hide the body parts of the victim by burying him in the area of Vitosha on the outskirts of Sofia. He buried the head and skeleton but the other parts were flushed down the toilet.
