Love is love and when Cupid’s arrow strikes it’s best not to stand in its way, whatever form it comes in. One couple who thought they were dead set on the ‘type’ of people they found attractive had things completely shaken up when they fell head over heels for each other.

Jacob Hoff, 29, and Samantha Wynn Greenstone, 36, first met at an audition for the musical Fiddler on the Roof in 2016 and it wasn’t long before the two performers were joined at the hip, quickly becoming best friends and regularly staying up until 4 am chatting.

However, while Samantha believed Jacob was gay, she battled to keep her own feelings in check as their bond grew deeper and deeper. But after keeping quiet for 16 months, Samantha eventually went to see an energy healer who told her that she could see a 'spiritual umbilical cord' connecting the two best friends.

Ruffled by the explanation, the 36-year-old reached out to Jacob to ask if he had ever felt more for her than just friendship, which prompted the actor to visit Samantha that weekend. The unconventional couple moved into Jacob's home in Los Angeles, California, and six years later the pair are still as loved up as ever, having risked everything to pursue a romantic, monogamous relationship.

Jacob claims that he felt both “elated” and “afraid” when he received the text from Samantha - worrying that his sexuality would make it difficult for him to have a successful relationship with a woman. However, the couple, who shared their story on TikTok with the title 'I'm gay and I have a girlfriend', claim they were scared to explore their “powerful” connection beyond the platonic - as Samantha was straight and Jacob had always identified as a gay man.

Although Jacob admits that it was “confusing” to have these feelings for Samantha whilst identifying as gay, the duo claims that their bond made things easy. And despite their difference in sexuality, Samantha claims that her relationship with Jacob is healthier than her past relationships as it is built on a “soulmate connection”.

Samantha said: “I think we both felt that there was something there, but because it was a feeling neither of us had ever experienced - a pull to each other - it was just too powerful to place. I think we both were too scared to explore that because we knew we were so special to one another but also knew that we were working with Jacob's sexuality. Before I met Jacob, I was in a place where I said that I didn't want to be in a relationship with someone unless I meet someone who convinces me that their company is going to be more magical than me being in my own company.

“[Now], this is the happiest, healthiest relationship dynamic I've experienced, 1,000%. I think that we have a healthier, more loving relationship than people we know in our own lives, or other relationships we observe because I think our relationship is built on a soulmate connection. As unusual as the dynamic is, it felt natural and organic and like it was just divinely orchestrated.”

Jacob claims that before Samantha he had only ever been attracted to men and “feared” the more intimate aspects of their relationship - but was surprised to find that it felt “natural and easy”. Jacob said: “We had a completely platonic relationship for 16 months. I've always only been attracted to men. It was confusing [identifying as a gay man and having these feelings]. There was a lot of apprehension. Samantha went to an energy healer, who told her that we have a spiritual umbilical cord [connecting us]. “She reached out and texted me and asked if I ever felt more for her than just a friend. When that happened, I had two simultaneous feelings immediately.

“One of them was so much excitement and elation because I did feel more and was glad she asked me that. But there also was a fear that I was going to muck up this friendship because of my sexuality and I didn't want to do that. I didn't think I could successfully have a relationship with a woman.

“I have never been in an adult relationship before, so all of it was new and completely fresh to me. It was difficult in some ways, but it was with my best friend so we were able to navigate it so wonderfully. Intimacy has been incredibly easy. That was something that I feared a lot when we first were talking about our feelings.

“But when it happened it was so natural and comfortable and easy that it was shocking to me that it did work that easily. We've never had an issue in that regard.” Despite receiving some backlash online, the couple claims that they have a normal relationship that is “not weird in any way”.

Jacob and Samantha are now advocating for people to be more open-minded toward dating outside of their sexual preferences rather than being restricted by labels. Samantha said: “I think people are so practical in their definitions that feelings can get lost in the way. Love is love, and love transcends the practicality of everything.

“I think especially in this day and age, the younger generation try to make sense of everything with their definitions and with their labels. “But every single queer individual that we know personally has expressed how much they support us and love that we're just a pure definition of love being love.

“I know straight people who are dreaming every day to find their perfect partner. To find the love of your life is a blessing. I hope that our love inspires people to look for more than what they're already searching for in a partner.”
