Police are searching for answers after a horrified mother found a young woman's body wrapped in plastic in her own son's bedroom.

Cops launched a murder investigation after the unidentified mother told them of her discovery. She said that she walked into her 26-year-old son's room in South Los Angeles just after 1 am on Sunday to investigate a "distinct gas smell," Fox 11 reported.

Responding LAPD officers arrived at the home in the 2200 block of Wall Street in the South-Central area of South LA around 1.15am on Sunday and found a 20-year-old woman wrapped in plastic. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

It's unclear how long the woman's body had been in the room before being discovered. The victim has not yet been identified, and there was no immediate word on her cause of death.

Police in California are now seeking the mother's son for questioning in relation to the suspicious death, though no arrests had been made as of late Monday morning, an LAPD spokesperson confirmed. The homicide investigation is ongoing.

Neighbours said they did not hear or see any suspicious activity at the home in recent days. The motive and circumstances surrounding the young woman's death remain a mystery for now as police continue their investigation.

Elsewhere in California, a judge accused of shooting his wife dead had 47 weapons in his house, it was reported last week.

Orange County, California Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 72, was arrested after his adult son called 911 to report his mother, Sheryl Ferguson, had been shot at the family’s home in the upscale neighbourhood of Anaheim Hills, the district attorney's office said in a statement.

The shooting of the 65-year-old woman reportedly occurred at the house at about 8pm local time. Police rushed to the property but emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Ferguson was released a day later on $1 million bail.

Prosecutors want additional bail conditions because authorities recovered 47 weapons including rifles, shotguns, and handguns, and more than 26,000 rounds of ammunition during a search of his home. A rifle registered in his name is not accounted for, the statement said.

Prosecutors later filed one count of felony murder against him, with enhancements including personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury and death, and personal use of a firearm, according to a criminal complaint seen by ABC7.

The court document alleges that Jeffrey Ferguson used a Glock .40 in the shooting, and she "threatened the victim earlier in the evening by making a hand gesture indicative of pointing a gun at her."
