Rylan Clark relives awful moment fan cornered him for a selfie in hospital dash
Rylan Clark has recounted the uncomfortable moment he was cornered for a selfie at two in the morning while rushing to hospital fearing his mother was about to die.
The 34-year-old reality star has a close bond with his 71-year-old mum Linda who suffers from health issues. Rylan, who was nursed back to health himself by his mum following his breakdown after the collapse of his marriage in 2021, says Linda often requires hospital treatment.
In the past, the former Strictly Come Dancing It Takes Two host has explained that his mum has required to be on an IV drip as she battles Crohn’s disease. And he says there was one evening he was called in the middle of the night by medics who feared she could die of medical problems.
While Rylan was worried for his mother, he was alarmed when a fan spotted him in hospital and cornered him for a selfie while he was simply trying to reach his ill mother. He revealed all to the On The Mend with Matt Willis podcast: “One thing that always used to hurt me, my mum is sometimes quite unwell and she has to go into hospital.

So I’ve like rushed up to the hospital, it’s two o’clock in the morning, I look like f**king s**t. I look like Gollum.

“I’ve got a cap on, I’ve got a hood on, I’ve got all of this on and I get in the lift at the hospital - ‘Oh it’s you!” I just want to just put this out there, if you’re in a lift at the Royal London Hospital at two o’clock in the morning, you’re not there for a routine appointment.”
But the star explained he felt compelled to fulfil the fan’s request. He said: “Do you know what I mean? And what do I do? I do the f**king selfie. Because... and I’m thinking am I going to get to this ward and my mum’s dead? But you do it, because that’s what’s normal now – it’s crazy.”
The star was rushing to see his mum Linda - who he feared was dying at the time (Insyagram)Back in 2021, Rylan’s marriage to former Big Brother contestant Dan Neal collapsed after six years. The trauma of the breakup sent Rylan spiralling and he suffered a breakdown that his mum helped him through.
Reflecting on his lowest point, he said: “I am so strong, I am so so strong but I was so broken, like to the point where I physically couldn’t dress, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t do none of these things.
“I tried to, to end it a few times unsuccessfully - gratefully now. But I just remember going to sleep at night after doing nothing all day, living at my mums, frightened to leave the house, didn’t want anyone to see me – and I think that’s the fame side of stuff.”
He added: “I would pray that I wouldn’t wake up because then it wouldn’t be my fault. Does that make sense? And every morning I’d wake up and there’s that three seconds of forgetfulness where you think it’s a dream, or you don’t think it’s real and then you remember, and that’s it for the rest of the day.”
