Former NFL running back Alex Collins has sadly died after being involved in a crash on Sunday evening.

Collins' 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K motorcycle had crashed in Lauderdale Lakes in south Florida, when the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban SUV had turned left - colliding with Collins' bike where he 'came to rest' inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with the circumstances being investigated into.

Collins spent five seasons in the NFL, most of it with the Seattle Seahawks while having a few years with the Baltimore Ravens - and had been a beloved teammate by many. Former Seahawks and current Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was one of the first to pay tribute to Collins, naming him one of his favourite ever teammates.

Wilson tweeted: "To one of my favorite teammates. You brought joy to every huddle. Keep Dancin’ in Heaven. Love you AC. Forever missed."

Collins spent two years with the Seahawks, where he became a fan favourite as a tough-nosed running back - winning the starting job in his rookie season and then again in 2021 in relief of Chris Carson.

Reacting to the tragic news, the Seahawks' general manager John Schneider wrote: "The Seahawks family along with the 12s are so saddened to hear of Alex's passing. Alex's infectious smile and classic river dance skills will forever be missed.

"Alex would light up a room and was beloved by our entire building. He enjoyed life and attacked it on the football field. He was one of the most productive runners in SEC history.

"Our sincere condolences to his immediate family, the Gatewood family, and his agent Kelli Masters. You will be forever be missed, Alex. On behalf of Jody Allen, Pete Carroll, Chuck Arnold, Chad Morton and the entire Seahawks community, rest in peace brother."]

Collins also spent two seasons with the Ravens, being promoted to the starter in his first season where he rushed for 973 yards and six touchdowns.

His former head coach, Ravens' John Harbaugh said: "Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly. I'll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impact everyone he encountered. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex's family. May he now rest in God's eternal peace."
