Emmerdale star teases new role ahead of 'sad' exit after 12 years on soap

Emmerdale star Liam Fox has addressed his character's likely exit from the ITV soap in upcoming scenes, heavily hinting he is leaving the role after 12 years – even teasing a brand new role.

His character Dan Spencer faces a long stint behind bars on a manslaughter charge, with him set to say his goodbyes in looming episodes. It's been teased in spoilers and in a chat with Liam with press that Dan will leave the village in "sad" scenes. Now the actor, who has played Dan for more than a decade, has teased a new role is on the horizon in line with his Emmerdale departure. Dan says his goodbyes to his loved ones and village pals very soon, after an incident with his teen daughter Amelia's stalker.

Dan punched Lloyd causing him to fall and hit his head, resulting in fatal injuries. Lloyd's death rose Dan's charge from GBH to manslaughter, and ahead of his sentencing, he knows it won't end well for him.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday, Dan star Liam confessed it is "not looking good" and heavily hinted his character would leave the show, while he did tease it could be a break rather than a final exit. Liam teased his new role lined up later in the year, hinting he could do some other bits before possibly returning to the village.

As host Kate Garraway addressed exit rumours, he said: "I could neither confirm or deny." As co-host Richard Madeley asked whether Dan's jail time could see actor Liam step away from the soap for the duration, he added: "Yeah it would because it's not looking good is it."

Liam then confirmed he would be appearing in pantomime this year, with Kate suggesting he could do the performances then go back to the ITV soap. It comes as the actor opened up about his character Dan's "last few days in the village". Liam told press, including Mirror: "When I read the scripts, it was like: 'Wow, this is awesome.' He's kind of taking it all in and realising that he's going and getting support from other people in the village. There's some lovely stuff.

"Before he goes, he goes into the Woolpack and Man Club are there and really supporting him. It's really well written, really nice stuff. It made me cry a few times reading it, so yeah, very emotional, lovely stuff. I feel very lucky to get that sort of script around the story."

Liam went on to tease his character's prison sentence, he said: "He's scared about how long he's going to get. I think he's presuming he's going to get three years or something like that. He's got it in his head, you know, after 18 months he might be out and everything. But even so, can he cope with 18 months? Is that something Dan can get his head around? Whatever Dan does, when he comes out, if he comes out, he's going to be a different man. Somebody like Dan will not benefit from prison."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
