Lady Susan Hussey is back working with the royals just three months after stepping down following racist remarks made to a black charity boss at a palace event.

Lady Susan, 83, quit her honorary role as a Lady of the Household following a storm over her comments to Ngozi Fulani.

She repeatedly asked Ms Fulani, who runs a black women's domestic abuse charity called Sistah Space, where she was “really from” at a November reception highlighting violence against women and girls.

Following the allegations, Buckingham Palace released a statement condemning the "unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments" and confirmed the aide had "stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect."

Now, just three months later Lady Susan, who is godmother to Prince William, was asked to step in on behalf of Princess Anne at the Dame Frances Campbell-Preston on Tuesday at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.

However, her name was curiously left off the Court Circular, which is the daily bulletin explaining all official royal duties.

A family friend told Richard Eden: "Lady Susan was formally asked to represent Princess Royal at the service.

"She was more than happy to do so. Her official position was recorded in the order of service. It's great to see her back in the royal fold."

A source added that "usually only those representing the King or the Queen Consort at memorials who are recorded in the Court Circular".

It appears to be Lady Susan's first official royal duty since meeting Ms Fulani in December for reconciliation and also cementing her place back within the royal's inner circle.

She was pictured with King Charles III in January going to St Mary Magdalene Church on the royal family's Norfolk estate on Sunday.

The Mirror also revealed in December that Lady Susan has been invited to the coronation in May.

It comes after Ms Fulani said on Twitter how Lady Susan asked her what her nationality was and "what part of Africa are you from?".

Eventually, Ngozi says she replied: "I am a British national, my parents came here in the 1950s," before Hussey responded with: "Oh, I knew we'd get there in the end, you're Caribbean."

In December, the two women met at Buckingham Palace again, with an official statement saying: "At this meeting, filled with warmth and understanding, Lady Susan offered her sincere apologies for the comments that were made and the distress they caused to Ms Fulani.

"Lady Susan has pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved and is grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the issues in this area.

"Both Ms Fulani and Lady Susan ask now that they be left in peace to rebuild their lives in the wake of an immensely distressing period for them both.

"They hope that their example shows a path to resolution can be found with kindness, co-operation and the condemnation of discrimination wherever it takes root."

Ms Fulani and her charity also received abusive messages from trolls on social media in the days that followed the revelations.
