Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could not resist taking a cheeky dig at Newcastle when quizzed on new Premier League rule changes.

Several new rules have been implemented this season, including one which permits only one coach to stand in the technical area at a time. And when asked about the rule change, Klopp cracked a joke about Newcastle boss Eddie Howe's assistant Jason Tindall.

Tindall went viral last season for his touchline antics and Howe himself has said the new rule comes as a "blow" for Newcastle. "It's strange that's been brought in this season," he commented.

"From our perspective, that's a blow… we've just worked naturally. There’s been no big plan of ours at the start of our careers to work in the way that we do, it’s just naturally evolved. We’ve always had that way of working.

"When the game’s going on I want to help the players as much as I can and I hope to help rather than hinder them by being close to them and trying to be quite active and vocal. And naturally, he joins in.

"There are certain aspects of the game I ask him to concentrate on and he will then in that moment try to help the players too. Only one of us can do that, it’s just something we’ll have to navigate. I think you’ll see quite a bit of rotation from us on the sidelines.

"I think he’ll feel a natural tendency to want to get forward then be told he probably can’t. We don’t want to see him get sent off so we’ll have to try and get him chained to the dugout!"

When Klopp was asked about the rule change, he joked: "It's like that in the Champions League anyway. I think it's only a problem for one team: Newcastle. Sorry!" Klopp was speaking after Liverpool began their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Reflecting on the result, he added: "I'm OK with a point. I saw the game, so I know who could've won... we could've lost as well, that's how it is. I think they had the last chance of the game, right? That would've been a great moment to finish it off.

"But we had a really good start into the game, [I] liked that a lot. But obviously Chelsea was better in the game. It was an open game then and second half with the crowd and all these things, we had to dig really deep and fight hard.

"In the end we got a point and that's OK. I saw a lot of things I liked and, of course, some things I didn't like particularly, but it's a first game in a tough place. I tend to see it rather positive, to be honest. So far in my career the first matchdays were always difficult and an away game at Chelsea as a first matchday is not a top draw. So we have a point and we keep working."
