'I compared supermarket orange juice to find best - winner was so unexpected'

Pure freshly squeezed orange juice is one of life's little luxuries - but as it doesn't always come cheap, orange juice from concentrate is usually the next best thing, with each supermarket offering its own.

If you always get your food shop from the same place then you might be perfectly happy with the juice you usually buy, but have you ever wondered which supermarket carton of smooth orange juice actually tastes the best?

I recently became curious, so decided to put five supermarket own-brand juices to the test to see which I thought was worth buying -and which I'd never drink again in my life.

The orange juices came from Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco and the prices ranged from 59p to £1.20, but the winner of the bunch was an unexpected surprise.

Orange juice Smooth from concentrate, Sainsbury's, 95p
Verdict: Not quite as thick-looking as juice can sometimes be, a bit thinner in consistency, and more watery. It also tastes a little watery, but has good orange flavour and also smells very citrusy. A perfectly reasonable drink for the price. I'd buy this one again. Score: 4/5

Mum's touching gesture to young son who died leaves Morrisons shopper in tearsMum's touching gesture to young son who died leaves Morrisons shopper in tears

Orange Juice Smooth from concentrate from Asda,£1.20
Verdict: This juice doesn't have as much of an orange smell to it and in terms of taste, it's not overly sweet but is actually quite bitter. I'd drink it, but it wouldn't be my favourite, and I'm not sure it's worth the price as the others are all cheaper. Score: 3/5

Orange Juice Smooth from concentrate, Morrisons, £1.15
Verdict: The drink from Morrisons has a scent that reminds me of Berocca, and the taste isn't super fruity in my opinion. Not sweet enough for my tastes either. I didn't enjoy this one. Score: 1/5

Grower's Harvest Smooth Orange Juice exclusively at Tesco, 95p
Verdict: You get the sharpness of the citrus first when you sip this one, followed shortly by a rather sweet aftertaste. It's nice, but not the best option so far. Tastes a bit more like orange squash than orange juice, but the consistency is thicker than squash. Score: 2.5/5

The Juice Company Orange Juice Smooth from concentrate, Aldi, 95p
Verdict: I don't live near an Aldi so don't buy my groceries from there and wasn't sure what to expect from the bargain supermarket, but this was great. It ticked all the boxes and tastes exactly as you'd expect orange juice from concentrate to taste: fruity, sweet and pleasant. It pours nicely and smells good. Can't fault it. Score: 5/5

Everyday Essentials Orange Juice from Concentrate, Aldi, 69p
Verdict:
As well as the above, I also tried one other from Aldi for a bit of fun as I wanted to see if I could find an even cheaper option amid the cost of living crisis. This was the Everyday Essentials Orange Juice from Concentrate which costs 69p for a carton and has to be cut into to open it. And while I wish I could say it fared as well as Aldi's winning juice, it might just be the worst drink I've ever had. Not only does it not smell like orange juice, it doesn't taste remotely like it either. I'm not sure if it's something to do with the packaging altering the flavour, but it's got a very unpleasant taste and the juice itself is quite murky in colour. I spent ages trying to work out what the scent reminded me of and I couldn't quite put my finger on it, the only thing I could think to compare it to was baked beans, which isn't what anyone wants to be drinking. In case it wasn't obvious, that one got a 0/5.
