Evolutions is a new addition to Ultimate Team in EA FC 24, but what looks to be a fantastic feature could be easily ruined.

EA FC 24 is the first instalment of the EA Sports FC game series, EA's replacement for its long-running FIFA franchise. with EA moving away from such a big name like FIFA, the publisher knew it had to make a name for itself with EA FC 24, and based on the information that has been released regarding the new game so far, we are expecting a lot of big changes and new features.

Pro Clubs, now called Clubs, is finally receiving crossplay, Career Mode looks set to be better than ever and even the menus are getting a massive overhaul. But we all know that Ultimate Team is the biggest game mode of them all, and EA has introduced a brand-new feature called Evolutions amongst other additions to freshen things up.

Ultimate Team Evolutions is a new way to build your UT squad with the players you want, allowing players more flexibility. In EA FC 24, you can put any player you want (within specific requirements) into an Evolution path, which will upgrade a player's rating, stats, weak foot, skill moves or even their position.

Evolutions look set to be a successful addition to EA FC 24 Ultimate Team, but there seems to be a slight catch that could really ruin it for a big chunk of players.

EA FC 24 Ultimate Team Evolutions – pay to upgrade?

For years now, Ultimate Team has been the staple of EA Sports' FIFA series, with the popular game mode being EA's biggest cash cow. The in-game purchase of FIFA Points, now called FC Points in EA FC 24, is responsible for a huge amount of EA's yearly profit.

It's not just packs you can buy, with EA now making different customisation items like kits, tifos and even FUT Draft entries available to buy with points. In the old FIFA days, most players would play games and trade to grind their way to earn coins to then purchase packs or players on the transfer market.

But now, I believe FIFA 23 is very much a pay-to-win game. If you didn't load up your account with FIFA Points from launch, your team more than likely fell behind the meta curve in weeks, and the players who poured money into their accounts could quickly obtain the best items in the game.

When it was first announced that Evolutions would be coming to Ultimate Team, it got me really excited. Too many times I have fallen in love with a player at the beginning of a new FIFA title that I've had to stop using after a few weeks because they fell behind the power curve due to the number of promos released.

But with Evolutions, I could upgrade these players each Ultimate Team Season, meaning the 76-rated striker I start the game with could be leading my line as a 91-rated player after a few months. Now, this is still a possibility, but when looking into the Ultimate Team deep dive pitch notes released by EA, it seems some Evolution paths will only be available to users if they use coins or points to purchase them. Boo.

The pitch notes stated: "A selection of Evolutions will be freely available for players to enter each season, and some will have coins or coins/points requirements."

To me, this could mean that the small upgrades for low-rated players can be achieved freely, but if you want to upgrade a high-rated player even higher, you can pay to do so. For example, a requirement for an Evolution path might be a striker rated 82 or lower, but for a fee, the minimum rating could increase to 85.

If this is true, it takes a lot away from this new feature to me. It would just create another pay-to-win method, making the game unbalanced and unfair for the players who don't want to buy points or can't afford to.

Yes, you can use coins, but the point stands, there's no reason that these Evolution upgrades should be behind any sort of paywall.
