Corrie's Lucy Fallon celebrates co-star's birthday after teasing soap 'return'

Coronation Street's Bethany Platt star Lucy Fallon celebrated her co-star Colson Smith's birthday on Sunday amid reports her character is set for a return.

The actress, 27, is said to be heading back to the ITV studios in the coming weeks to film brand-new scenes. It is expected that Lucy’s new scenes won’t air until the new year.

And Lucy sparked further return speculation on Sunday as she shared a throwback snap of herself on the ITV soap with former co-star Colson, 25, who plays Craig Tinker. Posting a snap of her character Bethany hugging Craig with the caption "' can I have a hug' - Bethany", Lucy poked fun at the soap scene as she wrote: "Happy birthday can I have a hug x @colsonjsmith."

Elsewhere, Sally Ann Matthews, who plays Jenny Connor, celebrated Colson's birthday too. Posting a snap together, she penned: "Happy birthday @colsonjsmith! Have a brilliant day, love grandma x p.s we need a new picture." Ellie Leach, who played Faye Windass and was recently announced for Strictly 2023, also celebrated Colson's birthday writing: "Happy birthday my bestie boo love you lots hope you have the best day ever!!!! xxxx" with heart emojis.

Fans of Coronation Street will be well aware that Lucy’s character was involved in some of the most prolific storylines in the soap’s history - including a controversial grooming storyline, which bagged actress Lucy a series of gongs at the British Soap Awards. Bethany was last seen leaving the street to pursue a career in magazine journalism in London in 2020.

A source told The Sun on Sunday last month: "Lucy is one of soap’s most talented actresses who won lots of awards for her powerful portrayal of Bethany’s grooming storyline. Bosses reached out to her a few weeks ago about the possibility of coming back and told her everything they’d planned for Bethany if she agreed. She discussed it with her boyfriend, and family because she’s a mum now with a baby. Once they’d talked about childcare, and how best to juggle it all, she was able to say she’d love to return."

Bethany's mum Sarah Barlow has been part of several dramatic twists recently. Fans will recall that Sarah's husband, Adam, recently declared that he wanted a divorce after he learnt that his wife had not only cheated on him with Damon Hay but had pretended he was the father of her baby, which she tragically lost last week in heartbreaking scenes.
