Max Verstappen will shortly find out – if he hasn't already – whether or not the producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive followed his instructions about how to portray him in the Netflix series.

The latest season of the show will be released on Friday, giving fans never-before-seen insight into what happened behind closed doors in the 2022 season. It is likely to be as popular as ever, given the show has been credited with bringing a huge wave of new fans to the sport.

However, Drive to Survive has also come in for some criticism, particularly from established F1 fans and some of the drivers and team bosses themselves. Many have accused the show of fabricating some of the drama on display – something the producers deny.

But many still hold that opinion, including Verstappen. The Red Bull racer was a very noticeable absentee from the series covering the 2021 season – the year in which he won his first world title in the most dramatic and controversial of circumstances against Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen refused to do interviews for that series of the show. He agreed to return this year, but only after holding talks with the producers and gaining assurances that the on-screen portrayal of him would be true to the events that actually happened.

"I always wanted to be part of it but said it needs to be a realistic image of how I am," he told reporters late last year. "That's why we needed to talk about it first and they understood my side of it, and I understand in general that when you create a show there needs to be drama and it needs to be exciting.

"But I'm a guy who thinks it's also important that you are portrayed well, and not start to have comments put under different footage, when it didn't happen like that. So I explained that was my view and that otherwise I didn’t want to be a part of it. They understood, so we'll see once it comes out what they made of it."

Whether he has already seen the series in advance, or will be watching it when released on Netflix like everyone else, Verstappen will surely be asked if he was satisfied with his portrayal ahead of the first race of the year. Another driver, though, this week brought up the subject again as he looked back at past clips featuring himself.

A video clip of Lando Norris watching and reacting to the show was released on social media this week, in which his then-McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo is shown saying: "He forced me off," over the radio, even though there is plenty of room between the two cars.

Norris took exception to that particular radio message playing over footage of the two McLarens next to each other on track. He said: "They made it out like we are biggest enemies here. 'He forced me off' – that wasn't even from this race! Look, he's not even near me!"
