Film stars Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson are set to light up the small screen in Channel 4's upcoming romantic drama, Alice & Jack.

The series boasts a star-studded cast led by Academy Award-nominated actress Riseborough, 41, and Golden Globe nominee Gleeson, 40. Both actors are not just leading the cast but also serving as executive producers on the series, joining forces with former Bafta chairman and renowned film producer Krishnendu Majumdar.

Adding more sparkle to the ensemble are Sex Education's Aimee Lou Wood, comedian and Greatest Days actress Aisling Bea, and Stath Lets Flats star Sunil Patel, all set to play supporting roles.

Filming for this much-anticipated TV show, touted as a "love story for the ages", took place across various picturesque locations including London, south-east England, and Gran Canaria, during the summer of 2022, according to Channel 4.

Before the Sag-Aftra actors' strikes hit the US, Riseborough shared her thoughts on the series, saying: "We unite in yearning to see evidence of real love and, too, are soothed to share with one another the ache of its inevitable imperfection."

She added: "This story is for anyone who could or couldn't make the sacrifice that love demanded, for anyone who battles and accepts the one who makes their soul soar, for anyone who longs to feel, who has felt, and who feels the tingling anticipation of love's joy."

About Time star Gleeson, son of The Banshees Of Inisherin actor Brendan Gleeson, shared his post-pandemic acting preferences. He said: "The only work I've wanted to watch and do since the pandemic is work about connection and love, and work with a sense of humour."

He further elaborated on the irresistible bond between Alice & Jack, his character's relationship in the series, stating: "Alice & Jack keep coming back to each other because they can't help themselves they find in each other something that they don't have on their own."

Gleeson went on to describe their relationship as more than just romantic, saying: "I think they're soulmates, I think it's bigger than just the two of them. Their story centres on connection and love in the most beautiful way and reminds us that we are always allowed to smile even if it's through the tears."

The series, penned by Mad Men's Victor Levin, traces the journey of Riseborough and Gleeson's characters from their initial encounter, unfolding an "honest, intimate, and surprisingly funny" narrative that showcases "love in all its unexpected, technicolour, kaleidoscopic beauty", according to Channel 4.

Juho Kuosmanen, co-writer and director of the 2021 Cannes Grand Prix co-winner Compartment 6, will helm the series as lead director. Meanwhile, Hong Khaou, writer and director of the Bafta-nominated ITV drama series Lilting, will take charge of the second block of the series.

Channel 4 confirmed on Thursday that both Riseborough and Gleeson were "directly involved" with Groundswell Productions in the development of the series.
