Connie Britton has shared behind-the-scenes snaps from The White Lotus to pay tribute to the devastating wildfires ravaging the Hawaiian island of Maui.

With the death toll currently at 55 and expected to rise, thousands of residents and tourists have been evacuated, and horror scenes erupted as various people jumped into the ocean to avoid the scorching brush fires that broke out on Tuesday on the resort island. And actress Connie was overcome with emotion as she paid tribute to the island where she had spent a lengthy amount of time in 2020 while filming for the Emmy-winning series created by Mike White.

Sharing snaps alongside the show's production crew and her co-stars, such as Sydney Sweeney, Murray Bartlett and Lukas Gagas, she began: "Maui. My heart is broken. Your loss is all of our loss. Your generous island and shores held us so lovingly when we shot @thewhitelotus during covid in 2020. And now we send massive love and strength for recovery during this unbearable time. You will always be a brilliant gleaming gem with a gorgeous heart and unbreakable spirit. #maui."

Social media followers of Connie also shared their heartbreak at the tragic events, while others shared their memories of Maui. "I'll never forget my time on Maui and in Lahaina, years ago, and that was an extra treat for me that was a part of the beauty and brilliance of The White Lotus. Beautiful sentiment," one person wrote.

Another added: "I was in Lahaina and Wailea in January heartbroken to see the destruction and devastation to such a beautiful community." A third said: "Praying for all. So very devastating and sad."

There has been utter devastation in Hawaii, with dozens wounded and officials fearing the death toll could continue to rise as fire, fuelled by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, forced people to jump into the sea to escape. The wind-driven conflagration swept into the area with alarming speed and ferocity, blazing through intersections and leaping across wooden buildings in the Lahaina town centre, which dates to the 1700s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The historic town of Lahaina had 271 of its buildings damaged or destroyed. US President Joe Biden said the government would be providing "all available federal assets" to help combat the fires. The Coast Guard, Navy and the Marines are deploying helicopters to fight the flames, too. In the meantime, the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu is expected to accommodate up to 4,000 people displaced by the blaze, including thousands of tourists — many of whom got stranded at the airport after flights were cancelled.
