Australian star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the US Open as he pulls out of the grand slam tournament 18 days before it starts, in the latest blow for the ace.

The 28-year-old was due to play at his first major of the year after pulling out of the French Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon prior to the tournament. However, injury has struck once again for the former world number 13 as he misses the Queens major.

His latest absence has been put down to a wrist issue, with the star having withdrawn from his home Grand Slam with a knee injury earlier this year. He also missed the Slam at Roland Garros due to a foot injury.

His woes in terms of his fitness meant that 2023 has been a year to forget for the star, especially following his exploits during the previous twelve months. His run to the Wimbledon final saw him demonstrate the extent of his obvious potential and his subsequent run in the US Open was also impressive.

He made the quarter-finals at Queens after downing the No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round of the tournament before bowing out over five sets to Karen Khachanov in the last eight. Surgery on his left knee at the turn of the year saw him miss out on the Australian Open, however.

Kyrgios is not the only participant in the draw to have withdrawn just weeks before the tournament, with Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff also missing out on the action. As a result of this, Argentine compatriots Diego Schwartzman and Facundo Diaz Acosta have been moved into the main draw for the competition.

This latest disappointment for the outspoken character means that he has played just one match during this calendar year, with this coming in Stuttgart. He struggled to live up to the form he showed during 2022 in that match, losing to Yibinhg Wu in the first round of the tournament, 5-7, 3-6.

The aforementioned wrist knock that meant he was unable to play at Wimbledon also saw him miss out on playing at UTS, Washington, Atlanta and Toronto. The world number 92 withdrew from the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati, which would have served as a warm up for the US Open later his month.

The single men's draw will begin at the US Open in New York on August 28, with the brackets set to be determined on August 24. In a post on their social media page, the US open confirmed that Kyrgios would be a notable absentee for the Grand Slam this year.

Their post read: "Nick Kyrgios, a 2022 quarterfinalist, is out of this year's US Open. Hope to see you back on the court soon, Nick!"
