NFL legend Tom Brady is quickly having to get to grips with the subtle intricacies of English football after he purchased a stake in Birmingham City.

Earlier this month, the world-famous retired quarterback stunned football when he announced that he would be the latest household name to step into the sport. Following in the footsteps of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham, the 46-year-old has become a minority shareholder at St Andrews and will head up their new advisory board.

Although the seven-time Super Bowl victor spent 23 illustrious years in the NFL, it appears that his knowledge of English football is a little less extensive - something that the megastar is only too happy to admit himself. Taking to Twitter, he made light of his need to perhaps do some homework as the games start to come thick and fast for the Blues.

Pre-season may have a bit more of a pedestrian pace as players get back to full fitness but the EFL season is infamously relentless, with 46 fixtures to fulfil in total. The Blues will also take part in both the EFL Cup - otherwise known as the Carabao Cup - as well as the FA Cup, which will pad out the team's schedule even more.

However, this was seemingly news to the New England Patriots icon Brady, who took to Twitter to admit that he has been having to hastily do some homework prior to Brum's clash against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup. In a post, he joked: "One of the first things an American has to learn about football is the different competitions. Carabao Cup night coming up, here we go boys!"

Brady will have been buoyed by the fact that the Blues were able to record their first win of the season, as they beat Cheltenham 2-0. They were held by Swansea City in a 1-1 draw on the opening day of their league campaign.

Despite his dearth of knowledge in this regard, there is no doubt that the three-time NFL Most Valuable Player Award winner is far from lacking when it comes to his understanding of what is required to compete at the elite level. Hoping that he will be able to bring some a dose of his winning mentality to the Championship club, he issued a committed statement of intent about his plans moving forward.

He asserted: "Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me. BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none. I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham."

Birmingham may have struggled to a 17th place finish in the Championship last season but the 2011 EFL Cup winners' chairman Tom Wagner added his belief that Brady's introduction could help the club to progress in the coming years. He said: "The goal that Tom [Brady] has committed to own is to make Birmingham City a respected leader in nutrition, health, wellness, and recovery across the world of football.

“A commitment to Blues fans was made on Monday 8 May 2023, to add experts from the world of sport and football to the team, putting in place the building blocks for future success. With Garry Cook as CEO, Hope Powell as Women’s Technical Director and now Tom Brady we are off to a fast start. Success does not come overnight. It takes time. But when you have great leaders in place everything becomes possible.”
