Dr Hilary Jones has revealed the secrets to his youthful appearance after shocking fans by revealing his old age.

The TV star - who is a frequent guest on ITV shows Good Morning Britain and Lorraine - turned 70-year-old earlier this year. His landmark age was marked by ITV with a special celebration on 63-year-old Lorraine Kelly’s morning show back in June.

And while fans were left gobsmacked by the fact he was decades older than many though, the doctor himself has explained there are some simple tricks to replicate his youthful looks. While make-up is on his list of age-defying tips, other reasons have also been explained.

He says that exercise, hanging out with younger family members, and keeping abreast of news also help him keep feeling young, fit and sharp. He has shared all his tips in the latest edition of Best Magazine.

He told the publication: “I felt very flattered that people were surprised that I was 70 - I put it down to make-up! And also exercise, over the years. But I don’t think of myself anything like that age, I think of myself at 25.

“Having five kids and surrounding myself with young people, and keeping up to date with the news, helps to establish that mindset of youth. I never really want to grow up properly - I’m far too immature for that.”

Despite his years, it seems Dr Hilary is happy to party hard - ratcheting up no less than three parties to mark his 70th. He explained: “I had a family do, a friends’ do and an ITV do, which was really nice as well. And they did a lovely tribute on-screen to all the fun stuff we’ve done over the years. I was really spoiled that week.

“Then, later in the year, we’ve got a big family holiday together - all the kids, their partners and the grandchildren, so I’m really looking forward to that.”

While Dr Hilary has teased make-up is a top tip for looking more youthful, he has also warned about the dangers of keeping beauty products in the cupboard for too long. Last month he opened up to the Mirror to explain when beauty fans should bin their products.

He said: "These products will have an expiration date. So what's important to realise is that they will go off and stop working if you keep them for too long after they've been open. "So look for a little open jar symbol with a number on the packaging. And that tells you how many months it can be used after you've opened it. That's a good indication of when you should stop using it.

"So it's important that you don't keep it for years and years that you have a symbol and check to see if you need to buy some more." Do you have to be really strict about this?

According to the doctor, it's "probably ok" if it's just a few months out from the sell-by date, but he claims you wouldn't want to use it for more than a year afterward. And that's only if you've been storing it correctly, of course.
