Light, dark and golden rums all start off the same way. It's a liquor made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane but it's what happens next that makes the difference. Golden and dark rums are then aged in barrels which is where they pick up a lot of their colour and flavour.

Golden rums aren't aged for quite as long as dark rums which results in them having a less smoky flavour and they're often perceived as a little bit sweeter. For fans of spiced rum this is a popular choice when branching out.

Here at the Mirror we've had a look at finding the best available on the market, taking into consideration the flavour notes, alcohol level and even the stylish bottles to decide which are must-haves in any home bar. Whether you prefer a traditional Caribbean option or would rather something a little closer to home we've got it all.

Here is what we consider to be the best golden rums on the market, coming from our rum expert Jada Jones:

1. Mount Gay Eclipse

Mount Gay is proudly the oldest rum brand in the world with it being founded in Barbados in 1703, and it's managed to stay relevant for hundreds of years by having a quality product. The classic rum has slightly burnt notes and an oaky character with a light to medium body and is widely considered to be a must have in any home bar.

The golden spirit also has distinct notes of vanilla and banana with underlying notes of caramel, spice and summer fruit. It works well neat but we love it as part of an Original Rum Punch.

2. Appleton Estate Signature Rum

We rounded up the best 8 golden rums for under £30Appleton Estate Signature Rum

Appleton Estate is a classic name in the world of rum, but not everyone is aware that it's actually produced by the same people behind J. Wray & Nephew. The original recipe for a Mai Tai is believed to have been created in 1944 using Appleton Estate 17 Year Old (named J. Wray & Nephew at the time).

You can't get your hands on the 17 Year Old Blend, which retailed at £550 before going out of stock, but you can try some of the other blends from the legendary distillery. The most budget friendly option is the Signature blend which features notes of peach, apricot and molasses.

We'd suggest whipping it up into a Mai Tai to pay homage to the famous cocktail the brand is known for but it also works well in a classic Daiquiri.

3. Don Q Gold

Golden rums show up in more than one classic cocktail. Back in 1954 Monchito Marrero at The Beachcomber Bar came up with a drink that would end up being a popular lyric in a song that's known around the globe: the Piña Colada. Don Q Gold's pineapple and vanilla flavour which is rounded out with black pepper and a touch of oak was perfect for the drink.

If you like Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain then this is the rum for you. It's best served in the classic cocktail although the Puerto Rican rum always works beautifully with cola.

4. Chairman's Reserve

We rounded up the best 8 golden rums for under £30Chairman's Reserve

This rum was first blended in 1999 as a special project to create a fine quality rum that was able to represent the iconic St Lucian style. It has an aroma of caramelised fruit and oaky vanilla which pairs beautifully with the chocolate, raisin and even tobacco notes held in the centre.

It's a smooth rum and essential in any rum fans collection. It might not be the original rum used in a Mai Tai but it works beautifully in the classic cocktail. Chairman's also works well over ice in a tumbler.

5. Grand Kadoo Club 8 Year Old

Grand Kadoo gets its name from the finale event of the Crop Over Festival, which can be traced back to the 1780s, the Grand Kadooment. This refers to a big occasion filled with joy and vigour.

Vanilla and spice play central notes in this flavourful rum, alongside toffee, tropical fruit and orange. This is a great rum option for those who often find themselves reaching for spiced rum. It's delicious straight but works well in any classic cocktail.

6. Cut to the Smoke

We rounded up the best 8 golden rums for under £30Cut to the Smoke

Cut to the Smoke is the first smoked rum in the UK, and with it's infusion of Arabica coffee beans, burnt wood chips and final stage resting in oak barrels it shows that. It smells of coffee, cocoa nibs, oaky vanilla and perhaps most notably pipe tobacco. The flavour is a mix of brown sugar, leather and charred smoke. It's the best rum on the market for whiskey drinkers.

We like it best neat but it works well on ice or mixed with citrus flavours. It's a little more unusual than most rums but definitely one to pay attention to.

7. Angostura 1919

We rounded up the best 8 golden rums for under £30Angostura 1919

Many of us are familiar with the name Angostura but the ingredient that comes to mind first from the brand is typically the famous bitters which where original produced by Dr. Johann Siegert in 1824 as a medicinal tincture. Needless to say the brand expanded and now the name is synonymous with cocktail essentials. The 1919 blend is a multiple award winning rum based on quite a unique story.

In 1932 there was a catastrophic fire in Trinidad and in the aftermath hundreds of charred casks were found at Trinidad’s Government Rum Bond. It turned out that the casks had been filled in 1919 and had spent the last 13 years ageing. The delicious rum salvaged is what is now known as 1919 and to this day they use the same blend to make up the sipping drink.

It has an oaky base that widens into sweet flavours of vanilla, honey, fruits and allspice. It's delicious neat in place of a dessert or alongside chocolate.

8. Gosling's Gold Bermuda Rum

We rounded up the best 8 golden rums for under £30Gosling's Gold Bermuda Rum

Gosling rum originally started with a distinctive black rum now known as Black Seal, for a period of time it was sold in champagne bottles and the corks were sealed into placed with black sealing wax - it's no surprise that this led to it being called 'Black Seal' amongst fans and gave birth to the seal playing on the bottle.

In 2016 the brand launched its Gold Seal rum which caters to an audience who likes something a little less rich, it has notes of crème anglaise, stone fruits, dried peels, tropical fruit salad and of course oak and spice. It's a gentle and medium bodied rum.
