Sixth Strictly signing announced as BBC presenter joins star-studded line-up

Angela Scanlon has been announced as the sixth celebrity to join the 2023 Strictly Come Dancing line-up. The BBC presenter, 39, was announced on Monday's instalment of BBC Radio 2, where their identity and voice was disguised before a surprise reveal to listeners.

The Irish presenter works for BBC and RTÉ, hosting Your Home Made Perfect on BBC Two and her own Saturday night chatshow Angela Scanlon's Ask Me Anything. Angela is also known for her work on The One Show and Robot Wars.

The presenter said of joining: "I’m terrified, I’m excited and I have so many questions. Will they make me tan? How itchy are sequins?! Do they do flesh coloured sports bras? Well - there’s only one way to find out, right!? Now I’m panicking a bit… but also secretly thrilled about the prospect of all that glitter. Let’s go!"

Angela added on BBC Radio 2 of whether she had kept Strictly a secret: "I've told a few people... I think I've been grappling myself and hoping for some feedback. So I've been saying: 'What do you think about this?' I don't know that I've kept it [secret]. I was ready to burst! So I've told 1700 of my closest friends."

Gaby Roslin then revealed that back in 2016, Angela had admitted she would like to do Strictly. To which Angela quipped: "Ah, be careful what you wish for! Wow, 2016, seven years ago... if only I started practising then! Look, it's been kind of in the ether for a number of years. Truthfully, we wanted to have another baby, we were trying to have a baby, I was then pregnant, then I had a very small child and now it just felt right this year.

"I believe in feelings and timings, all of those sorts of things. Look, I'm not particularly fit, I've no idea how my pelvic floor is going to react to that level of jumping. I've never done any of these dances in my life apart from a drunken jive at a family wedding. So there certainly feels like there is room to learn!" Angela added she had called former Strictly stars, Ellie Taylor and Clara Amfo, for advice.

The update is the latest since comedian Eddie Kadi, a host on BBC's 1Xtra, joined the show alongside Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who was confirmed on host Claudia Winkleman's BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday morning.

Speaking about joining the show, Eddie said: "I'm unbelievably proud and honoured. I promise you, I’m going to give it everything I’ve got," as the news was revealed on Eddie's Afrobeats Chart Show on Sunday afternoon.

Krishnan said he was "delighted and confused" to be among the celebrities taking part in the 21st series of the BBC dance competition. The Channel 4 news anchor said he hoped a stint on the dancefloor would be a nice change from his "serious" day job.

The journalist, who has fronted worldwide events including the Omagh bombing of 1998, 9/11 and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, said: "I love my job. It’s very, very privileged, I go to amazing places. I talk to amazing people, but it’s incredibly serious”.

He added: “It’s quite stressful. It can be quite difficult and sort of the idea of being able to have pure intravenous joy, because I’m going to be doing the news at the same time, is just irresistible.”

He said: “I told my wife first obviously and I sort of said ‘what do you think? Do you think I should do it?’ and she was like ‘yes definitely do it’, which is funny because we’ve talked about it in the past and we were all like ‘no never’, but something changed this year. I think we all just kind of thought, now’s the time. Just do it.

“And I have an 18-year-old daughter who thought it was a brilliant idea and I have a 16-year-old son, who I’m really, really sorry I just have to apologise to him, but yeah he’s appalled.”

On Friday, broadcaster Angela Rippon, actress Amanda Abbington and Bad Education star Layton Williams were the first celebrities to be announced for the new series, on BBC One’s The One Show. Rippon will make history as the oldest contestant to appear on the show, turning 79 before filming starts.

The 21st series of Strictly Come Dancing will be judged by Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse. In 2022, the competition was won by British wildlife presenter Hamza Yassin and professional Strictly dancer Jowita Przystal.
