Taylor Swift's song 'seven' was included as the soundtrack for an emotional lesbian scene on TV hit Heartstopper. Heartstopper’s music supervisor, Matt Biffa, confirmed on Twitter that Taylor offered the track.

He replied on Twitter to a fan who insinuated that the show offered Taylor a check for the rights. Matt replied: "She just thought the scene was beautiful and we were then able to make it work."

The deeply emotional scene is shared between a young lesbian couple, Tara and Darcy. This is a quick spoiler alert, so reader beware. Prior to the scene, Darcy's mother kicks her out of their household when Darcy insists on wearing a suit to prom. As a result, Darcy stands up Tara who had previously confessed to being in love with Darcy.

After prom, Tara goes looking for Darcy, coming face to face with her mother. While Tara withholds that she is, in fact, Darcy's girlfriend, she does get a glimpse at just how homophobic Darcy's mother is. Luckily, the rest of their fans are able to find Darcy and the couple connect for a difficult conversation.

Tara isn't mad at Darcy, but instead they share an intimate moment. Darcy opens up about how hard it has been for her to have an unsupportive mother which Tara was previously unaware of.

Darcy explains: "You told me that you didn't feel as confident about being a lesbian as I did and I wanted to be that person and I wanted to be that person for you to help you through your journey... I'm not even out to my own parents. I don't think I ever will be. I hide who I am when I'm at home."

"I'm not confident," she adds. "Sometimes my mom makes me hate myself."

Darcy then reveals her inner turmoil is why she struggled to tell Tara she loves her, too. However, following the conversation, she confidently and enthusiastically tells Tara she is in love with her. That's when 'seven' by Taylor Swift playing as they share a kiss.

Taylor sings, poetically: "Or hide in the closet and just like a folk song our love will be passed on. Please picture me in the weeds. Before I learned civility, I used to scream ferociously any time I wanted."

Matt also confirmed to a fan on Twitter that this was the only scene Taylor was shown. When a fan expressed annoyance that Taylor's song Paris wasn't included, Matt replied: "We gave you “seven” instead."

Some fans believe that this is confirmation that the song is about a closeted LGBTQ+ child (or children) growing up. A fan tweeted: "seven is about someone who was metaphorically hiding in the closet because of their sexuality and Taylor Swift just confirmed it."

This isn't a recent speculation on the song's meaning. One fan tweeted in 2021: "Taylor Swift’s seven is so gay. Why are we hiding in the closet??"
