Thick plumes of black smoke soared into the atmosphere as a massive fire broke out at a recycling facility.

Witnesses posted pictures online showing the huge fire, which appeared to be very close to Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, southeastern New Mexico. Authorities said the fire broke out at a plastic recycling plant in Mesa Del Sol.

The building was evacuated. Emergency services rushed to the scene and battled the blaze. The fire began at the 5300 block of Hawking Drive, per Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR). It was reported at 2:38pm local time. The cause of the fire is unclear as of yet.

Fire crews said the blaze included “structures, product, and vehicles” and ordered the public to stay away.

It is unclear if anyone was injured as a result of the fire as of yet. Authorities haven't released a warning for local residents to remain inside and protect themselves from the fumes as of yet. Although the area where the fire broke out is remote, local residents are reporting on social media that the smoke seems to be approaching residential areas due to the strong winds.

Another picture posted on social media showed the flames visible in the burning plastic recycling centre. Multiple vehicles of emergency responding crews can be seen at the scene. The massive smoke cloud appears visible from hundreds of miles away. BCFR and Albuquerque Fire Rescue are on the scene, per KRQE.

Another social media user who seems to be a local resident, expressed their worries about potential pollution being produced as a result of the blaze. Another social media user who appears to be a local resident, Ron Patel @rpatelusa, wrote: "Black smoke near Mesa del Sol in Albuquerque is the recycling plant in the industrial park. Smoke is currently blowing away from the neighborhood where residents live but with the way the wind is here, you never know if that could blow towards homes."
