Woman allegedly shot to death by cop after brutal street beating caught on CCTV

A police officer alleged to have shot his girlfriend to death in the street after giving her a brutal public beating is facing murder charges after turning himself in.

Shocking video footage of victim Simeia da Silva Nunes's last night alive was caught on CCTV cameras in Carpina, Brazil. Her boyfriend - police officer Jaleson de Santana Freitas, 37 - is allegedly seen punching and kicking her as they prepare to leave a bar.

First Freitas is claimed to have thrown her against a wall, smashing her face into the brickwork, as she gets up from the table. Then - in the grim footage filmed on 29th July - he allegedly trips 33-year-old Simeia and throws her to the ground as she walks up to the bar.

While she is helpless on the floor, he is said to have stamped on her face before grabbing her hair as he repeatedly smashes her head on the ground. Just moments later - in more disturbing security camera footage - Simeia is seen in the street hailing a motorcycle taxi.

But before she climbs onboard, a driver - allegedly Freitas - roars up in a white car and shoots wildly before speeding off. The biker staggers to a nearby bar with bullets in his left leg and arm. But Simeia - hit twice in the chest - staggers just a few steps before collapsing in the street.

Paramedics rushed her to hospital, but emergency medics declared her dead on arrival. Local media named the taxi biker as Jose Marcelo Batista Rego, 38, who was treated for gunshot wounds to his arm and thigh. Freitas was arrested four days later (2nd August) after turning himself in at Carpina police station.

He is being held on remand at the Pernambuco state Military Police Rehabilitation Centre. Freitas is accused - report local media - of murder with aggravating factors and attempted homicide. It has emerged that last year (2022) he was sentenced to four years in jail for a killing in 2011.

The victim - who had a psychiatric condition - had been slapped and knocked to the ground by Freitas and later died of a brain injury. He was not, however, required to serve his sentence, as under local law the case was too historical for him to be punished.
