Lizzo, also known as Melissa Viviane Jefferson, hit the mainstream back in 2019 with her third studio album Cos I Love You. The album reached number four on the US Billboard charts and had spawned singles like Juice and Tempo. She had previously released two albums, Lizzobangers and Big Grrrl Small World in 2015, and an EP titled Coconut Oil in 2016.

It was her 2016 single Good As Hell that secretly climbed the charts and saw her receive eight nominations at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the most for any artist that year. Later, her 2022 track About Damn Time saw Lizzo become the first Black female singer since Whitney Houston in 1994 to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Before becoming a pop sensation, all Lizzo had was her flute and her 1999 Subaru, which she lived out of for six months because her parents had moved to Denver. She told CBS This Morning : "That was my home for a little. I spent Thanksgiving in that car, and I remember I cried myself to sleep."

In 2008, she answered a Craigslist ad for the lead singer of a band, which she says boosted her confidence. When the band broke up, it was Prince who co-signed her and let her feature on his 2014 song Boy Trouble. She told NPR: "Prince was the first person to really make me feel validated as an artist when I heard that track. And I got paid! My first big cheque ever."

Now Lizzo is worth $40million (£31million) and has had features with the likes of Cardi B, Beyonce and SZA. But it seems her rise to fame and pop stardom is beginning to stall as she faces a sexual harassment lawsuit, brought forward by her former dancers. She's also been accused of weight-shaming and creating a hostile work environment through sexual, racial and religious harassment in several incidents between 2021 and 2023.

But breaking her silence, the 35-year-old branded the claims "false allegations" and said "the last few days have been gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing."

In a statement posted to Instagram, Lizzo said: "My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticised. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed."
