Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been spotted on a special date night as they continue to put on a united front.

The couple, who have been plagued by cruel split rumours, were seen enjoying an early birthday celebration for Meghan at the trendy restaurant Tre Lune near their home in Montecito. They were seen leaving the Italian eatery, which is a favourite with celebrities, after having dinner with friends.

It is the first time they have been seen together out and about in public since speculation began to swirl about their next moves and the possibility of tension behind the scenes. However, Meghan, who turns 42 today, was all smiles as she was seen leaving the restaurant earlier this week in a striking strapless black and white striped dress, which she paired with casual sandals.

Harry also opted for a low-key look in a blue shirt and light-coloured chinos in pictures of the couple, which have been obtained by MailOnline. The snaps show them leaving the eatery, which is said to be a favourite of the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, and heading to their car.

It is the couple's second appearance together in days after a video was released on Wednesday showing them calling young innovators and campaigners to congratulate them on being awarded a share of a multimillion-dollar prize to boost their efforts. Harry and Meghan rang some of the 26 recipients who will receive the financial award from the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund – and joked that their children were "incredibly grateful".

The couple sat together on a seat in what appears to be the garden of their home as they rang the surprised winners with Harry telling one: "Thank you for doing everything that you do. Our kids especially are incredibly grateful." The Sussexes have a son Prince Archie and a daughter Princess Lilibet, and Meghan added: "They don’t know it yet – but they will."

Today as Meghan celebrates her birthday, it is likely she will be spending the day low-key at home with Harry and their children. It's unclear if there will be birthday wishes sent across the Atlantic from the royals.

However, it has been reported that the Sussexes have been snubbed from commemorations to mark the first anniversary of the Queen's death. The couple are set to be in Europe for the Invictus Games a day after the anniversary, but according to royal sources, they will not join other royals in mourning the late monarch next month.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to mark the anniversary on September 8 at Balmoral with other members of the family. Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will be joining the commemorations. But insiders have claimed that there has not been "any outreach" to Harry and Meghan, who are based in the US but will be in Germany to kick off the Invictus Games 24 hours later. It is believed the Sussexes have not been invited to any public or private commemorations.

An insider told The Sun: "There hasn't been any outreach to them." But a source added: "If they are not included in any of those plans they will find a way to mark the significance in their own way." When the Queen died last year, Harry flew in a private jet alone after William, Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, and did not see the monarch before she passed away.
