Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner has explained the “significant” role that Tom Brady will play in the running of the club.

The NFL legend has become a minority owner of the Championship club after the news was announced on Thursday. The former quarterback will assume the role of the chairman of the Blues’ advisory board, among other duties.

Brady retired from the NFL in February after a two-decade-long career in American football. During his time in the sport, Brady won seven Super Bowl rings with two teams, including six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wagner, a US investor, and Knighthead Capital assumed a 46 percent stake in Birmingham in July. Brady has forged a strong relationship with Wagner and the company over the years, having also been part of the group’s ownership of a Major League Pickleball team.

Now the American has explained what role Brady will have to play at Birmingham. Wagner went on to explain why the deal to bring in Brqady was far from a promotional tactic.

“He is not here for promotional purposes, and obviously today is all about having Tom be very visible,” Wagner told .

“But really what it's about is Tom bringing his expertise, following a 23-year career in the NFL. Which is highly competitive, as everyone knows and where he had unparalleled success.

“If you think about the fact that Tom played in 10 Super Bowls in a 23-year career, won seven of them. Was only favoured twice, if I remember correctly, in those Super Bowls. That’s a pretty incredible track record.

“And his level of excellence never really tapered off. So it’s about bringing those learnings to Birmingham.

“So Tom will chair our advisory board. He will have a significant role in health, wellness and nutrition.

“Effectively, human sustainability, and will play a role in how we think about player interaction.”

After the news was announced that Brady had become an investor in Birmingham, the legendary former quarterback issued a statement to the club’s fans. The former QB expressed his thanks for being able to be part of the club, and why he is looking to make an impact at St Andrew’s.

“Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me,” said Brady.

“BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none.

"I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.”
