Liverpool are hoping to sign another centre-back before the end of the transfer window amid doubts over Andy Robertson's long-term capabilities in a hybrid role.

The Reds have made two signings so far this summer, with Alexis Mac Allister signing from Brighton for £35million and Dominik Szoboszlai making the £60m switch from RB Leipzig. Jurgen Klopp is also eyeing up another midfielder, having lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Arthur and James Milner.

Southampton's Romeo Lavia is the name being mentioned after Liverpool saw a £41m bid rejected for the 19-year-old earlier this week. Fluminense star Andre has also been linked with a move to Anfield as Klopp tries to bolster his squad before their Premier League opener against Chelsea.

Although adding at least one new midfielder is his priority, Klopp is said to be keen on signing another defender before the transfer window slams shut on September 1. According to the Liverpool Echo, a left-sided centre-back remains on Liverpool's transfer wishlist, with question marks remaining about Robertson.

There is some uncertainty about whether Robertson will be able to play in the defensive-hybrid position long-term, after Klopp decided to switch to this new shape at the back end of last season. Robertson has been used a little deeper in pre-season with Trent Alexander-Arnold having the freedom to roam forward into midfield.

Levi Colwill had been linked with a move to the Reds after impressing on loan at Brighton last season, but he is no longer an option after he signed a six-year deal at Chelsea on Wednesday. Kim min-Jae was also someone of interest for the Reds, however, he has now joined Bayern Munich.

Liverpool might accelerate their centre-back search after Klopp saw his side fall to a 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich in their penultimate pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

The Reds looked as though they were going to round-off their pre-season tour of Singapore in the perfect way as they roared into a 2-0 lead. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk had put them in control against the German champions.

However, they relinquished that advantage before the break as Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane both found the net. Liverpool edged ahead through Luis Diaz's fine effort, but late goals from Josip Stanisic and Frans Kratzig saw them fall to their first defeat in pre-season.

Speaking after the game, Klopp said: "Around the goals obviously not that great, but there were a lot of other moments that were really, really good as well. The last line was good. We have to still adjust. It’s not so much about the boys and stuff, [but] yes it is, of course, in these moments.

"The first goal we concede, Trent and Joel have to react better. This pass, I don’t think it is [able] to avoid, to be 100 per cent honest. We cannot always be there and block all balls, sometimes balls will fly towards our last line. It was just a little doubt in between, but both stand on both feet – I am not sure exactly when it was, 30 minutes when they scored the first goal? – so we felt the intensity properly then, like humans are."
