Laura Woods insists her TNT Sports appointment "wasn't immediate" - as the popular host prepares for her new presenting job.

Woods was announced as TNT Sports' new football presenter in July, around two months after she was first rumoured with the gig. She will lead the broadcaster's coverage of the Champions League and host the occasional Premier League fixture.

TNT Sports launched last month following a merger between BT Sport and Warner Bros. Discovery. Several pundits from BT Sport's football coverage have been kept on by TNT Sports, such as Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.

Woods discussed the role with Ferdinand ahead of the new football season. TNT Sports' lead pundit asked how she was offered the job, with Woods describing the speculation as her "comeuppance" for speculating about transfer rumours in her previous job.

Woods was first linked with the role in May after Jake Humphrey, who was BT Sport's lead football presenter, announced his decision to step down after the Champions League final. Speculation grew in June when Woods quit talkSPORT's breakfast show.

Woods was finally announced as TNT Sports' new lead football presenter last month. Although it's easy to assume she was always going to get the job, Woods insists the process wasn't that simple. "It wasn't immediate," she told Ferdinand.

"But it (talks) did go quickly once it started to move. There were a lot of rumours before I was approached, to be honest. I was like, well, this is my comeuppance!

"All of these times that I woke up on the radio, and go, 'Here's a rumour I'm going to tell three million people about' - and then suddenly the rumour was me! I was like, 'We're not talking about it!' to my producers."

Woods has established herself as one of the most popular presenters in English football in recent years. She worked her way through the ranks at Sky Sports before getting the odd presenting gig and becoming a pitch-side reporter for their Premier League coverage.

Woods left Sky Sports last year, as demand for her talents grew. DAZN employed her for their coverage of the Women's Champions League and Matchroom's boxing events, while she is currently leading ITV's coverage of the ongoing Women's World Cup.

The presenter could've easily turned down TNT Sports' offer, but she wanted to work for them because of their interest in fan culture. She added: "I think the thing that sold me the most was they want to be near the fans, they want to be by the fans.

"And I think for me as a presenter, what I've really enjoyed is that rough and ready presenting. Going to the ground, being amongst the fans - it's different, isn't it? You can't replicate it in a studio."

Woods also believes her experience of working behind the camera during her time in Sky Sports will set her in good stead for her new role. "It gives you an idea of what everyone in production is doing, and it means that you're working with them," she explained.

"If you don't understand everyone else's jobs, it's almost like you're working against each other. "(I'm) very excited. To start a new project with a new team, having a clean slate is really great place to start. I'm excited about it, but I feel a bit nervous about it too.

"I feel like I'm the new kid in school, and you guys all know each other, and you've been in lessons for a few years, you sit at the back of the class, and I feel like I'm going to come in and sit at the front of the class... and be the most intelligent one!"
