A fanatical pro-Putin MP in Russia is aiming to introduce new legislation banning Barbie dolls in the country.

Marina Butina, 34, once jailed in the US on the espionage charge of "conspiring to work for a foreign government”, wants children to have Russian-made dolls promoting the dictator’s war in Ukraine. Butina slammed the Barbie range, claiming: “A doll that has a female breast and a male sexual organ at the same time is NOT normal.”

The Russian law needed to be changed “urgently”, she said. She also hit out at the Barbie movie arguing it “did not need to be shown because what we see [are] gays, transsexuals, women who took over the world - that is Barbie dolls. “There is nothing about a union [between] a man and a woman, nothing about love…

“We have our own dolls…Barbie along with the Mattel company should be removed from the market. Because they bring LGBT here. Let them promote [LGBTQ] there [in the West]. We don't need it.”

She criticised Barbie’s being bought by kindergartens “at state expense”, saying they flout Putin’s laws banning “LGBT propaganda” among children. She objected to “a Barbie in favour of abortion”, asking: “How long will we keep these 'dolls' on our shelves?” She said Barbie was an advertisement for the values of Joe Biden’s Democratic Party in the US, and should not be imported into Russia.

"I am categorically against the appearance of dolls in our stores, for example, transgender people, or dolls that promote same-sex relationships," said Butina. Her rage contrasted with the evident support for Barbie by senior female politicians in her own United Russia party who were recently seen dressed in pink. This included Valentina Matviyenko, head of the Russian senate, known as the Federation Council, the country’s most senior woman politician, aged 74.

And there are famous Barbie wannabes like influencer Tatiana 'Tanya Barbie' Tuzova along with pro-Putin Ukrainian Valeria Lukyanova, 37. As an MP, Butina represents Kirov which has a plant Vesna making dolls showing girls as tank drivers, paratroopers and military paramedics. These “patriotic” toys - seen as promoting Putin’s militaristic policies and war in Ukraine - are subsidised by the Russian taxpayer.

Butina, who represents pro-Putin United Russia party, was arrested in the US in July 2018 and sentenced to 18 months in prison for espionage, specifically "conspiring to work for a foreign government”. She had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to act as a foreign agent, reducing potentially far longer time behind bars. Butina was convicted of seeking to infiltrate conservative groups in the US including the National Rifle Association.

She was deported to Russia October 2019 after her sentence was slightly reduced for good behaviour. "In America I was arrested on charges of being a foreign agent for Russia,” she said when she stood for the Russian parliament.
