Katie Waissel was left requiring medical attention after she injured herself while using a mandolin – which she believes should be banned.

The singer-songwriter and activist who became a household name following a stint on The X Factor shared her gruesome injury with her Instagram followers on Monday. Katie, 37, described the injury as the "worst ever" as she shared a snap taken in the emergency department of her local hospital.

Taking to her Instagram in view of her followers, the law student's hand could be seen wrapped in a white bandage while her middle finger was completely covered with extra padding. Writing alongside her post, she penned: "Mandolin 1 - 0 Katie."

Mum-of-one Katie continued: "I swear mandolins, or me using one, should now officially be banned! Worst injury ever sustained," before adding a vomiting emoji. A mandolin is a tool which is used to slice vegetables at a fast pace with a singular blade often working in the same way as a grater.

In recent months, the songstress has been updating her social media about her activism work as she fights to change the reality television industry and ensure that more aftercare is put in place. During her stint on the former ITV talent programme, Katie was subjected to horrific abuse and even received death threats from members of the public.

Sharing a glimpse of several newspaper clippings from her time on the show with headlines about the death threats and abuse she was facing, Katie told her Twitter followers: "It is absolutely inhumane, I will be damn sure to work relentlessly to uncover the person. and/or persons behind this. And when I do, make sure that they are absolutely held to account and to never, ever do this again, to anybody."

Earlier this year, Katie became qualified to work as a paralegal as well as to train to either become a solicitor or barrister after starting a law course at BPP University in London. Following her studies, Katie has never shied away from discussing her ordeal on the show which she claims had detrimental effects on her life. Speaking to The Times, she explained she hopes to sue Syco, Simon Cowell's company which was behind the programme.

She told the publication: "The show ruined my life, there are so many of us who have been so trapped and it’s not fair, there was a huge imbalance in power. I just wanted to be able to understand [the contracts] and to protect people from being manipulated in the future."
