PGA Tour star J.T. Poston lost out on £203,000 ($260k) in prize money, after a disastrous triple bogey eight on the final hole of the 3M Open on Sunday.

Poston was attempting to chase down 54-hole leader Lee Hodges in the final round, in a bid to win his third PGA Tour title. Despite Hodges dominating throughout the weekend, bogeys at the 15th and 17th slightly opened the door for second place Poston.

Stood on the 18th tee the man in second found himself three shots behind the leader, but with a par five still to play the two-time winner still had an outside chance of causing a final hole upset. And after Hodges found the rough from his tee shot, Poston looked to take his chance.

Unsurprisingly the American star took on the aggressive play, but his own drive from the tee looked to be heading for trouble in the direction of the water hazard.

Fortunately for Poston his ball came just short of the water, but it left the 30-year-old with a slim chance of making the green in two. Knowing a layup would end his chances of victory, Poston took on the tricky second shot but things did not go to plan.

As he took on the green, he landed his effort short and saw his ball cannon into the hazard. After taking a penalty drop, Poston finally got himself onto the green after five shots, but his troubles were not done there. The American then went on to three-putt to finish with a triple bogey.

Not only did the 30-year-old miss out on taking home the title, but his nightmare at the 18th also saw him tumble out of outright second place and into a tie for the runner-up spot alongside two other players in Martin Laird Kevin Streelman.

And in sharing his place in the leaderboard, he was also required to share out a large chunk of the winnings. In finishing outright second the Poston would have £662,000 ($850k), but instead saw just over £200,000 shaved off that figure, taking home £460,000 ($590k).

Despite the hefty loss, the two-time PGA Tour winner revealed afterward that he had no regrets over taking on the risky play. "We're not coming here to finish second," he said. "At the end of the day we were trying to do something special and try and win.

"I wouldn't want to be sleeping tonight wondering "what if" if I had just laid it up instead of trying to go for it. No regrets on the decision. You know, tried to do what we could to win."
