Young boy, 5, suffered multiple brain bleeds at the hands of adoptive parents
A 5-year-old boy allegedly suffered multiple brain bleeds and other severe injuries at the hands of his adoptive parents.
The boy, identified as Landon Malobert was adopted by Lauren E. Maloberti, 34, and her husband Jacob N. Maloberti, 33, . according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney.
The case was discovered by police when Landon was brought unconscious to AHN Hempfield Neighborhood Hospital in Greensburg by his adoptive mother and father, on January 30.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children's Hospital for specialized care. Despite the medical team's best efforts, Landon died on February 7.
Following an extensive investigation into allegations of "severe child abuse," Lauren and Jacob Maloberti were arrested and charged in connection with their adoptive son's death.
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge himDuring the investigation, it was revealed that Landon had suffered extensive injuries, including "blunt force trauma to his head and neck, blunt force trauma to his torso, and blunt force trauma to his extremities.", District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli said. The hospital staff also reported that the child had endured three brain bleeds, leading to his brain being described as "obliterated".
The couple's five other children were interviewed during the investigation and provided heart-wrenching accounts of the alleged abuse. They disclosed that Landon was the only one their mother would spank, and they described hearing his cries during the beatings. The children revealed that their mother used various methods, such as her open hand, a wooden spoon, and even a spray bottle, to discipline Landon.
Further revelations from text messages between Lauren and Jacob Maloberti suggested that they harbored feelings of "disdain" for the young boy dating back to April 2022.
Landon's maternal grandmother also spoke out, telling investigators that she became concerned when Lauren stopped letting her see the boy, citing him as "bad." This development, coupled with the disturbing accounts from the other children, roused suspiscons about alleged abuse.
Just two days after they are accused of beating little Landon so badly he suffered three bleeds on the brain, Lauren set up a GoFundMe initially asking for help with legal fees and then funeral costs. The fundraiser, which has since been removed, raised $5,350.
Lauren wrote: "Tragedy struck our family when our precious baby boy went unresponsive. I rushed him to the ER and they intubated him and he's been unresponsive ever since. the outcome is not looking good.
"As we were in the hospital CPS took away our parental rights pending the investigation. I'm devastated. We are devastated. We both need good attorneys. My kids are my world. Any little bit helps us as we navigate life right now with our new uncertainty. Help us fight I can't live without our kids. I'm already loosing my boy."
The charges brought against Lauren Maloberti include criminal homicide, first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children, two counts of aggravated assault of a child, and criminal conspiracy.
Jacob Maloberti is facing charges of criminal homicide, endangering the welfare of children, two counts of aggravated assault, and criminal conspiracy. Both are currently held without bond at the Westmoreland County Prison awaiting arraignment scheduled for August 8.
Delmont Police Chief T.J. Klobucar said on the department's Facebook page on Friday: "In the 25 years I have been working for the Delmont Police Department, we have never faced an incident like this," Klobucar said. "To the family and friends of sweet Landon, this is the first step towards justice. Our hearts break for Landon and everyone who knew him and for this tragedy that ultimately took his precious life at 5 years old."
