Nintendo Switch Online offers up a family plan for up to eight people which could see you saving around £14 on a years subscription if you know enough people to split it with.

Nintendo Switch Online gives you access to the online multiplayer in Nintendo Switch games, access to cloud saves, and also gives you a large collection of classic games from the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. There's also the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription which gives you N64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Mega Drive titles, as well as access to DLC for titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons for an extra fee.

Normally the subscription costs £17.99 / $19.99 / AU$29.95 yearly, with the Expansion Pack costing £34.99 / $49.99 / AU$59.95 a year. However, there's another tier – the Nintendo Switch Online family plan – that lets up to eight players sign up together under one subscription.

As you would expect, the Nintendo Switch Online family plan is more expensive than the basis membership, coming in at £31.49 / $34.99 / AU$54.95 for the core Nintendo Switch Online sub, with the Expansion Pass version coming in at £59.99 / $79.99 / AU$109.95. But the key point here is that, unlike the likes of Netflix, this isn't locked to one household. You can set this up with anyone, anywhere!

So while, at first glance, the Nintendo Switch family plan can seem expensive, when you take into consideration that it can be split eight ways, it's night and day. If you and seven other Nintendo Switch owners went in together on a plan it would cost you £3.93 / $4.37 / AU$6.86 yearly for the base version and £7.49 / $9.99 / AU$13.74 for the Expansion Pack.

Even if it was just you and one other person, its still significantly cheaper than two separate yearly subscriptions. This is wild value when you consider the cheapest version of PS Plus is £49.99 / $59.99 / AU$79.95 for a year.

How to set up a Nintendo Switch Online family plan

To set up a Nintendo Switch Online family plan you'll obviously need a Nintendo account. While you can buy the subscription on your Nintendo Switch console, you won't be able to add other players to your account without access to a web browser.

The first step is to buy a Nintendo Switch Online family plan subscription. You can do this through the Nintendo eShop, under the section labelled 'Nintendo Switch Online'. You can also head over to the Nintendo Website and subscribe there. The third option is to buy a prepaid card with this subscription – which you can often find discounted – and redeem it on the Nintendo eShop.

To add players to your Nintendo Switch Online family plan, just follow these instructions:

  • Head to the Nintendo website and log in to your Nintendo account
  • Click on your account icon in the top right corner of the page
  • Click 'Settings'
  • Once you're in the Settings menu click the button labelled 'Family Group'
  • Select 'Add a member'
  • Select 'Invite to family group'
  • Enter the email attached to Nintendo Switch account of the player you want to add to the family group
  • Repeat until you have added all of your members

And that's it sorted. Obviously you and your pals will need to figure out the money between you as the Nintendo Switch Online family plan subscription cost will be coming out of one person's account. But other than that you're all free to enjoy the latest Nintendo Switch Online perks together.
