Every year the Royal Family make their way to Balmoral for their summer holiday, spending their days hiking, hunting and barbecuing in the beautiful countryside. While this year will be a little different as it will be their first trip without the late Queen Elizabeth, King Charles is still determined to get all his loved ones together to carry on the tradition.

Charles and Camilla will move to the estate for several weeks, with different members of the family joining them for chunks of time as and when they are free. Prince William and Princess Kate will be there along with their children, as will the Kings' siblings and their families. But there will once again be one notable gap, the Sussexes.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have skipped the last few Balmoral trips due to family tensions, and insiders believe it will be the same for 2023.

A source told the Daily Mail that despite everything that's happened, the couple and their children still have their "open invitation" to join all big family events - but they're not expected to accept it this year.

The Late Queen reached out to them last year to ask them to join her, in a move that was seen as an olive branch - however they declined.

Meghan and Harry spent time at Balmoral after their Royal Wedding in 2018 and returned with the rest of the family for the traditional trip in 2019.

Balmoral was said to be one of the Late Queen's favourite getaways, and she enjoyed spending proper time with all her family.

Speaking on ITV's documentary Our Queen at 90, her granddaughter Princess Eugenie said: "It's the most beautiful place on earth. I think Granny is the most happy there, I think she really, really loves the Highlands…walks, picnics, dogs, a lot of dogs, there's always dogs, and people coming in and out all the time.

"Family-wise we're all there, so it's a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be - for us to come and see them up there where you just have room to breathe and run."

But according to an insider, it's not almost the most relaxing break and things can be pretty hectic.

They told Vanity Fair: “It can get quite busy at what they call ‘the big house’ and it’s not especially relaxing even though it’s a holiday. There’s a daily routine which evolves around meal times, several outfit changes every day, sometimes five, and the Queen likes everything to run like clockwork.

"The focus is on being outdoors and in the countryside walking, grousing, fishing and hunting.”

Balmoral is a working estate with highlights including grouse moors, the lush green forests and farmland, as well as plenty of animals from the herds of deer to Highland cattle and ponies.

The Royals love grouse hunting, and go out regularly during their time at the castle.

Prince Charles, William, Harry and Kate have all been known to go out shooting over the summer months, and they've even taken George along to watch.
