But his character on the long-running ITV show will be unleashing plot bombs of a different type - and will be linked to Stu Carpenters family.

“The storyline kicks off early next month, and Darren will first appear on the cobbles next week.”

Eliza is the daughter of Bridget Woodrow who was played by Beth Vyse in episodes in 2022 - but her character was jailed after she was found to have killed someone years before.

This led to Stu taking in Eliza as Bridget was sent behind bars for her crime.

Now Stu’s family life could be rocked once again as Dom shows up to declare he is the father of Eliza - while her father has not appeared on screen before.

It will mark a return to the world of soaps for Darren - who has previously starred in Holby City and Casualty in a guest roles.

From 1997 until 1998, he played Dean Hocknell in the Sky One sports drama Dream Team where he starred alongside the likes of Terry Kiely and John Salthouse.

While his star power rose in 2002 when he played a character named ‘Spoon’ Whitherspoon in the British werewolf horror film Dog Soldiers which was created by iconic director Neil Marshall.

And his most recent film role included appearing in a supporting role in the 2017 film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

While Darren is joining the cast of Corrie, a number of current stars are due to exit the soap before ether end of the year.

Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter Barlow, will be leaving the show, although RadioTimes reports: “Gascoyne will be an extended break from the role as he has before, with the door very much left open for his return.”

While Peter Ash, who plays Paul Foreman, is also due to leave Weatherfield - with the character being killed off following his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.

Peter has discussed his exit storyline, saying: Paul is completely blindsided by the diagnosis and he decides to keep it from his family and friends as he tries to come to terms with the news.

"I knew very little about MND before embarking on the storyline and I am hugely grateful to the MND Association for all their help and support.

“For any actor playing a role which examines a real life issue or condition there comes a huge sense of responsibility and we are aware that some people watching this storyline are experiencing it in reality, it is their life.

"Awareness and education are really important. I have learned so much even in the short time I have been involved in this storyline. We hope Paul’s journey can make people more aware of the symptoms and what it is like for someone to live with MND."
