A taxi driver was brutally beaten up by five people in plain sight on a busy Manhattan street.

The man, who appears to be elderly, is pictured falling on the ground in Midtown Manhattan, New York, while the group of young people strike him forcefully and repeatedly. The circumstances under which the shocking brawl unfolded and what preceded is unclear.

Pictures from the scene show the group comprised of about five people, men and women who appear young, gathering around him and attacking him with their fists and legs, as well as with various objects.

As he tries to escape, the man then sits on the street with his back on one of the taxi's wheels and holds his head with his hands while appearing in pain and distress. No one appears to rush to his aid while at least one person was recording it with their phone.

Eventually, the people assaulting him all stop and leave. The man was then reportedly taken to New York University Hospital where he was treated and was in a stable condition.

Police reportedly said that the cab driver and the individuals got into an argument before the brutal beatdown. However, the reason for the argument and what it was about has not been determined.

Two of the people involved — 35-year-old Howard Colley and 51-year-old Natalie Morgan, both of Brooklyn — were arrested at the scene, police told the New York Post.

The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission said it became aware of the incident and denounced such use of raw violence. They said that at least one person had been arrested in relation to the incident.

In a later tweet, they referred to their members and acknowledged the effect that the reproduction of the incident may have on some drivers. For that reason, they urged any victim of assault to report it to the police.

The tweet read: "TLC Licensees: We know that hearing about driver assaults can be discouraging, and your safety is critical. If you are or have been the victim of an assault, always call 911 and file a report with the NYPD."

And they added: "After filing a police report, reach out to the TLC to report the crime. When you do, we will help connect you with resources and additional support for crime victims. To report the incident to the TLC, please email [email protected]."
