The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra may be one of Samsung's biggest rivals when it comes to flip phones

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was launched last week as Samsung hosted its Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea. It's taken the industry by storm thanks to a bigger front cover screen, more power and improve cameras but it's not without competition from existing foldable rivals.

That includes Motorola and its Razr Flip-40 Ultra, a small and compact flip phone with pretty similar design qualities to Samsung's latest device, at first glance that is. Both handsets start at around £1,000 so even the price isn't an easy way for consumers to distinguish between the two.

  • This Motorola Razr 40 Ultra deal means customers will pay just £21 total for two years of 25GB data each month

The Galaxy Z Flip5 costs £1,049 for both the 256GB and 512GB device (thanks to its current pre-order 'steal') and Motorola's Razr 40 Ultra has gone with the same exact same price, although there is no bigger storage size than 256GB.

Even though both handsets come with the same outright price, there's a big price difference when it comes to monthly network deals, ideal for those looking for the device and connectivity plan to come under one deal.

Providers including Vodafone and O2 have quickly added the new Z Flip 5 to their monthly plans and the hottest new device starts from £36 a month, but that doesn't always include data.

Despite both handsets initially costing the same price this ID Mobile 24-month plan will see shoppers pay a total of £1,154, and it includes two full years of unlimited data allowance each month and just £105.76 more than the handset price. When rounding up deals offered on both different handsets from providers, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra works out a lot cheaper.

O2's monthly rates on the Z Flip5 are tied into a 36-month plan, so at £48.30 a month for the handset and 30GB of data (one of their many data deals) customers would pay a total of £1,738 for the handset. O2 also sell the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and it works out a lot cheaper compared to the Z Flip 5 each month.

O2 is offering the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra for £45.37 a month with an initial upfront cost of £30 on a 36-month plan, bringing the total price to £1,663.32, exactly £74.68 cheaper than the Z Flip5 and with unlimited data not 30GB on the O2 Flip 5 plan we've compared.

O2 does offer an unlimited data deal on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 but it works out at £57.30 a month with an upfront of £30, coming to a total of £2,092 after 36 months, £429.48 more than the unlimited deal on the Motorola handset.

Vodafone is another provider with both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr 40 Ultra handsets offered on its monthly data plans, and again there's a big difference in the price on the same unlimited data deals.

For the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, shoppers will pay £929 for the handset (£25 a month for 36 months with an upfront cost of £29) plus an additional £37 a month for 24 months of unlimited data (£888 total for data) coming to a full total of £1,817.

Now onto Vodafone's same unlimited data plan for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and shoppers would pay £1,345 for the handset (£36 a month for 36-months with an upfront cost of £49) plus an additional £27 a month for 24-months of unlimited data (£648 total for data) costing an overall £1,993.

Differences between the Z Flip5 and Razr 40 Ultra

Motorola and Samsung continue to battle it out against each other. Before the release of the newest Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 the Razr 40 Ultra was often compared to the now 'old' Galaxy Z Flip 4 device, as both brands brought back the '90s style' flip phones.

Both devices flip open from a small square window to a large phone screen, assisted by a sleek hinge, that when folded out flat should appear completely seamless. The biggest visual difference between the two models comes with the screen size as the Motorola Razr 40 ever so slightly beats Samsung, with its 6.9 AMOLED display compared to a 6.7-inch display on the Z Flip 5.

Where the new Samsung device stands out is not visible as it's hidden within the smartphone and something only available with the newest Samsung smartphones. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Processor, the key to its quick speeds.
