Irish actress Sharon Horgan has joined in the tributes to late singer Sinéad O'Connor after she dies aged 56.

The Catastrophe actress led a touching tribute on her Instagram page to the Irish singer as she claimed Sinéad was "not treated well at all" and expressed her "anger" at treatment of the singer in recent years.

Sharing an image of singer Sinéad with her trademark shaved head hairstyle, Sharon commented on the sad news of the singer's death as she called it "terrible news".

Sharon, who is known for her comedy roles in programmes including Bad Sisters, described the star's death as "heart breakingly sad".

Writing on her Instagram page, Sharon said: "Oh this is terrible news. The worst. That voice.

"That insanely beautiful voice that could carry all the emotions in one line. Her bravery. Sinead was so loved by so many of us but she was also not treated well at all."

She continued: "I remember wanting her to do a song for a show I was making and being told she wasn’t right for their brand or whatever the f***.

"I’m just feeling so angry about how she was treated. But over all just heart breakingly sad for her and her family".

Fellow Irish actress Catriona Balfe commented on the post as she wrote: "Heartbroken for her family. She showed all us young Irish women there was another way of being. A beacon of fire and power."

A fan echoed their thoughts as they commented: "Rip. She was pure punk. Questioning, ahead of her time, and brave."

"Am devastated. For Sinéad, her family and all of us who loved her," said another.

A third added: "What bravery she showed when speaking truth to power. A beautiful voice in so many ways. Her passion and talent will be sorely missed."

Sinéad's death was confirmed by her family this evening (26 July). In a statement, the singer’s family said : "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

Sinéad's death comes a year after her son Shane tragically took his own life aged 17 in January last year.

Born Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor in Dublin on 8 December 1966, O’Connor rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra, and achieved worldwide success in 1990 with a new arrangement of Prince's song "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Aside from her music, O’Connor used her voice to raise awareness for charities, issues and causes throughout her career. however, the singer was at the centre of many controversies during her long career.

Most notably, in 1992, she used a performance on Saturday Night Live to protest child abuse, ripping a picture of Pope John Paul II while singing the word “evil”.
