Three US marines who were found dead inside a car have been named and pictured, as authorities say they have "no idea" why the three died.

Tanner Kaltenberg, 19, Merax Dockery, 23 and Ivan Garcia, 23, were all found dead inside a four-door sedan parked outside a petrol station on Sunday.

ABC affiliate WTVD News reported all three of the men held the rank of lance corporal. They were found around 40 minutes away from where they were stationed in Camp Lejeune.

No drugs were found in the vehicle in North Carolina when deputies located it after responding to a missing persons report.

"There’s nothing to believe it to be foul play or anything," Sergeant Chester Ward of the Pender County Sheriff’s Department told WDTV. "We’re waiting for an autopsy report, but we have no idea of probably what happened."

He wrote: "I couldn’t really post these in Setermoen Leir cause I would’ve gotten in trouble but we are coming down to the last days of deployment and it has been a blast."

Posting a picture of herself and Mr Kaltenberg on Tuesday, his devastated sister Brianna Windisch wrote on Facebook: "Our whole world is flipped upside down right now. I miss you fiercely bro… it’s never goodbye, it’s see you later. I love you so much."

Posting pictures of them together, she said: "My boy, my love, what a void you have left, and look how you came without knowing it was the last trip I would see you.

"Now who will I fight with? Who will I scold? Today I can't believe he is not here, oh my god, how painful my beautiful boy, why did you leave me'."
