Carnival Cruise passenger, 30, still missing after jumping off ship near Florida
A 30-year-old man aboard a Carnival Cruise went missing on Sunday, leaving the popular tourist line scrambling to locate him in the waters after video footage showed the man jumping overboard.
Relatives of the man became concerned and contacted security personnel on the cruise, who used their video surveillance system to track his movements. To everyone's shock, the video showed him jumping off the side of the boat as it was nearing Melbourne.
“The crew was notified by his travelling companion late (Sunday) afternoon about his missing status after he had not been seen all day,” the cruise line said. “Sadly, after an exhaustive on-board search and a review of security camera video, it was determined that he jumped.”
Authorities said they cleared the ship to continue to their final stop, which was Jacksonville. According to WFLA, the Coast Guard has dispatched the 87-foot cutter Tarpon from St. Petersburg, a Hercules aircraft based out of Clearwater, and a Miami-based Ocean Sentry aircraft.
“The Carnival Care Team is providing support to the guest’s family and our thoughts are with them and the guest,” the cruise line said. The man's name is yet to be revealed and likely won't be released to media until he is found or search crews conclude their mission.

On May 30, 2023, a man went overboard off a cruise ship 186 miles east off the coast of Florida. According to a statement from the cruise line, they examined CCTV footage which showed the man leaning over the railing of his cabin's balcony before dropping into the sea.
The cruise line has said they are providing support to the guest’s companion and travelling party who are still on board. Other passengers reported hearing Ronnie's name repeatedly called over the tannoy as his loved ones and the crew tried to find him. Unfortunately, the search was not successful.
Some who fall overboard do get lucky. Last year in November, footage showed the dramatic moment a man was rescued from the sea, up to 15 hours after he fell off a cruise ship while drinking with his sister. The 28-year-old was reported missing from the Carnival Valor as it headed from New Orleans to Cozumel, Mexico.
A cargo ship spotted a person in the water about 20 miles (32 kilometres) south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, and the mouth of the Mississippi River. When a helicopter pulled him out at around 8:25 pm on Thanksgiving, the man confirmed he was the missing cruise ship passenger.
The cruise line had come under fire before regarding their security measures - though there's not much a cruise ship can do to stop individuals from jumping or falling. In 2017, a child accidentally fell overboard as the ship was docked and passengers were leaving the ship. Since then, there have been at least several individuals that have required rescue after falling off a cruise ship annually.
