Bride-to-be appalled at wedding venue's 'passive aggresssive' email about guests

An excited woman says the build up to her big day has been soured by a sharp and threatening email from the wedding venue.

The message left a "bitter taste" after the bride-to-be was told her celebrations were at risk of being shut down if guests aren't policed.

They warned decisive action would be taken if her friends and family stepped out of line - and the tone has taken the shine off her preparations.

She said she received the email with the subject "AN IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT YOUR WEDDING" from Whitley Hall Hotel in Grenoside, Sheffield, on Friday.

YorkshireLive report that the woman, who has asked not to be named, is getting hitched next week.

She says it comes across "very passive aggressive" as the hotel reminded the couples that "any disruption or damage caused as a result of their actions will incur direct financial consequences."

The woman said: "I am spending tens of thousands of pounds to be getting married here and this isn't an email that I should be receiving from a reputable hotel."

"With the title of the email, I thought it was something really important about my booking, to be honest I thought they might be cancelling my big day... With the cost of living crisis, I thought maybe the hotel might be closing down or something.

"But then to read that it’s actually about expected behaviours, no drug taking and that we as the bride and groom will be expected to be liable for guests behaviour and be financially responsible is shocking.

"It just leaves a bitter taste, I personally think they have gone about it the wrong way and will have caused a bit of upset."

She added: "How do they expect the bride and groom to ‘police’ their own guests on their big day?

"I don’t think people attend a wedding with the intention of causing any trouble or damaging property and this should go without saying. If I was to ask my guests not to cause any trouble, not to take drugs or cause any damage at my wedding, they would be offended. This is what Whitley Hall is wanting its bride and grooms to be doing. Madness.

"I’m offended that Whitley Hall have felt the need to tarnish every customer with the same brush. I am quite upset to think that Whitley Hall believe they needed to send out this email to all as an expectation.

"To say there will now be a manager ‘watching’ over your day, I interpret this to be, as soon as someone steps out of line, will your wedding be shut down ? Who knows."

Whitley Hall responded and that they have "regrettably witnessed incidents of disruptive behaviour" at recent events. They said the incidents have "led to damage to our property and caused distress to our dedicated staff members."

The email read: "As the big day approaches, we wanted to address an important matter that requires your attention.

"We, the management of Whitley Hall Hotel, are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all our staff team, hotel guests and attendees at your wedding celebration, and recent events have compelled us to reiterate our expectations and potential consequences.

"It has come to our attention that there have been instances of disruptive behaviour at weddings held in our venue. This includes causing damage to property, displaying rude or aggressive behaviour towards our staff members, the taking of illegal substances and guests consuming their own alcohol on the premises.

"We find such behaviour wholly unacceptable and incompatible with maintaining an atmosphere of respect, harmony, and celebration.

"Therefore, we must emphasise that if any such incidents occur during your wedding, we will not hesitate to take decisive action, which may in extreme circumstances include bringing the celebration to a close.

"While this is an unfortunate course of action, our duty is to prioritise the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all guests and staff members. It is essential that these measures are understood and respected to ensure a successful event."

In a statement, the venue said: "At Whitley Hall, we wholeheartedly agree that the fundamental principles of respect and courteous behaviour should be self-evident during any celebration.

"Regrettably, we have witnessed incidents of disruptive behaviour at some of our recent events which have left us in the unfortunate position of having to communicate the standards of behaviour expected whilst on our premises. Incidents which have led to damage to our property and caused distress to our dedicated staff members.

"As a company we take our responsibility towards our guests and employees extremely seriously and we firmly believe that it is our duty to ensure that our premises remain secure and welcoming for everyone.

"We would be failing in our responsibilities to our staff team and guests if we did not take steps to address any issues which would compromise their personal safety or mental health.
