As Prince George celebrates his 10th birthday today (Saturday, July 22), a royal expert has explained how the young royal is completely different from how his father was at the same age.

At the age of 10, Prince William had been living away from home for two years as he was boarding at Ludgrove School in Wokingham.

In stark contrast, George and his siblings all attend nearby Lambrook School as day pupils and are afforded as much privacy as their royal status allows.

While Prince George will closely follow in his father's footsteps for many years to come, royal expert and author Ingrid Seward, the editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, spoke to the Mirror about how the young prince's life is world's away from the one his father knew.

When Prince William turned 10 in June 1992, it came at a time of intense struggle in his parents' marriage a it marked the year that they confirmed their separation.

Ingrid explained: "At the same age William was very sensitive and increasingly weighed down by his royal status. The sight of a camera made him uncomfortable.

"He became withdrawn and always kept his head well down. He was a boarder at Ludgrove School and had started to make friends, but when he was out and about, he became moody and difficult."

Referring to Prince George being surrounded by not only his parents, but other key family members too, she explained: "George has been helped not only by his parents but by his younger sister Charlotte, who gives him the odd dig in the ribs if he forgets to wave or smile.

"William and Kate are conscious that George needs to develop his philanthropic side and discuss things with him like the plight of the homeless – there are many of the streets of Windsor Town - and how he will be in a powerful position to help.

"There is nothing normal about being a royal prince however hard his parents try. But as William once said, 'right now it’s just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can'”. They have done exactly that."

The idea that the Prince and Princess of Wales have carefully planned Prince George’s introduction into royal life has also been pointed out by royal biographer Robert Lacey in an updated copy of his book Battle of Brothers.

Explaining his view that Prince George would have started to learn of his destiny at around the age of seven, Mr Lacey wrote: "Prince William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son. Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself.

"But sometime around the boy’s seventh birthday in the summer of 2020 it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince’s life of future royal 'service and duty' would particularly involve."

Robert continued that William and Kate wanted to sit George down at a "controlled moment of their choice" at the age of seven.

Their decision was said to link to "William’s unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start."
