Earlier this year UK broadband providers upped their prices by nearly 15% as customers with Sky, BT and Now TV faced yet another inflated monthly bill. Now, one broadband expert has shared a tip which will not only improve customers' speeds but save a lot of money at the same time.

The key to cheaper rates and often better connection is all down to 5G. Yes, the wireless tech integrated into most of our mobile phones could actually be the key for some households to access better internet at home.

Switching to 5G broadband, as opposed to the fixed connection, can help those who don't have speedy fibre broadband in their street with the web arriving in living rooms via a mobile signal instead - it's exactly like how your smartphone connects to the web when you are away from home.

As long as you have a decent 5G signal in your area you could see downloads in excess of 150Mbps - that's twice as fast as the current fixed-line average.

It's a tip Tyler Bevan, co-founder of broadbandsavvy.com, regularly promotes to help users boost their speeds.

He said: "87% of UK households currently use a fixed broadband connection to get online at home. With fixed-line broadband, your internet connection is delivered to your router via copper or fibre-optic cabling in your street.

"However, with recent advances in wireless internet technology, it's now possible to get online with 5G, instead of having a fixed-line connection."

Broadbandsavvy says that switching to wireless 5G broadband will allow household bill payers to save between 20-30%, and on top of the money cuts, they'll get quicker speeds.

As Tyler explains, he said: "After the recent price rises, you'll typically pay about £25-£30 per month for a superfast broadband plan, with a download speed of about 50-100 megabits per second (Mbps). On the other hand, with 5G broadband, you'll pay as little as £20 per month with certain providers, and you'll get download speeds of 200-300 Mbps, and sometimes even higher.

"This means you'll experience less buffering when watching HD or 4K video, and game updates on the Xbox or Playstation will download much faster."

To get faster speeds and save money on broadband bills each month, all households need is a Wi-Fi router and a data SIM card to use with it.

"All you need to do is push the SIM card into the router, plug it in, and turn it on. The router will take a few minutes to set itself up, and once it's done, you'll be able to connect to its Wi-Fi hotspot and begin using the internet."

Where to buy a 5G broadband package

Vodafone, Three, EE and O2 all offer deals on the required 5G broadband packages, but which is the best to go for?

Three Mobile

Starting off with the cheapest offer we've spotted, at Three. Its 5G Home Broadband package costs £20 a month and includes unlimited data. No landline is needed, no fixed connection and no engineer call out to set up, shoppers simply plug it in and start using it.

Shoppers at Three can choose between one and 24-month contracts, those who take out the bigger 24-month contract will get three months free and only pay £20 a month from month four onwards, saving £60 overall. Three also offer a 4G Home broadband product at the same £20 a month rate, although for the same price, we'd urge customers to go for the 5G product instead.

Vodafone

Vodafone also sells a 5G Mobile Hotspot device from £25 a month, which can connect up to 32 devices. Its cheapest £25 a month rate is on the 30GB of data plan, those looking for an unlimited data amount will pay £35 a month.

O2

Moving onto O2 and it offers the Nighthawk M6 Mobile Router from £22 a month but the price does rise depending on how much data you set. The cheapest £22 a month price includes 5GB of data otherwise, shoppers can pick from £28 a month for 40GB (including the router) or £34 a month for the router and 150GB of data.

EE

Lastly, we have EE, another brand which offers a 5G broadband router but at a much more expensive price. EE shoppers can get its Smart 5G Hub with unlimited data for £50 a month, with an initial upfront cost of £60. Instead of this, we'd recommend shoppers look at taking out an unlimited SIM-only deal for their handset and use that to access the internet on other devices, via hotspot.

This EE Unlimited SIM costs £30 a month on a 24-month plan and would work out around £480 cheaper (across full 24 months) than taking out EE's 5G Smart Hub.

Want traditional fixed broadband? This BT deal may be for you

A wireless wifi router may not be the right product for you, especially if you want to keep the traditional fixed landline too. Even though broadband packages generally work out more expensive than the newer wireless routers there are still some deals to make the most of.

Including the six months half deal currently on offer at BT.
